bones cracking= progression? | Arthritis Information

Hello everyone,

Hope the sun is shining where you are! It is beautiful in Nashville!

Just curious... does this constant cracking of every bone in my body mean this stuff is progressing pretty fast or what? I had a few pop now and then but since diagnosed--- it is crazy!!! When I move it is beginning to sound like fireworks are going off.

Also-- anyone else have neck and shoulder issues from RA?

Stacy

I have noticed in the last year or so EVERYTHING cracks!  Before, only my knees would occasionally poop.  I do not know how it correlates with the progression of the disease.  I understand that ra can affect your connective tissue as well, making your ligaments and tendons weaker which could explain more popping but I m just theorizing here!

My shoulders hurt the least of my joints but my neck constantly hurts, I have also been dx with fibro as well as that can make the muscle ache.
This happens in my knees. However, it's been going on since I cant remember. Way before I was diagnosed.  I dont know why this happens and never thought to ask the doctor. It's just a part of me. My husbands makes fun of it.

Hi Stacy,

Not sure about progression but all of my joints have variously cracked, creaked and popped for about 20 years (I am now 30) and my joint pain only really came on a few years ago. The difference I find now is that I get stiff joints that hurt unless they crack and the cracks have got much louder and more frequent. Sorry I can't be more help..

My joints are very loud too!!!! I have the worst trouble with my shoulders and neck. In fact that is what finally made me go get Dxed. I had made excuses for all my other symptoms in my hands, ankles and knees for years, but when I started getting the shoulder, upper back and neck pain, it became unbearable and even sent me to the ER a few times. I have gotten the cortisone shots in my shoulders , sometimes it has helped and also gone to PT for it, that also sometimes helps, but for me and I have damage and swelling in my other joints, but the pain in the shoulders and neck is the worst. I seems to swell in some joint in my neck and it must press on some nerves, so I have found that if I put ice there and bring down the swelling it helps. I have an ice pack in my freezer I have knicknamed "my buddy" It has become my best friend!!!

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the responses so quickly. I have soooo many questions being new at this and you have all been wonderful!

Thanks,

Stacy

WOW- we have alot in common! It was also my neck and shoulder that had me scrambling for help. When my neck pain started- my arms were just worthless- they aren't much better now. Both shoulders and my neck hurt more than anything else. Then hands and feet, but it moves around and no joint is left out. :(

I go snap, crackle, pop too.  But it has been going on for so long I guess I don't really think about it.  I think I was told once it is air getting into the synovial fluid in our joints.  Don't know how true that is or not.  I will ask my doc when I see him Thursday.  I can crack 3 knuckles on my left hand and crack my left foot.

Let me know what doc says ...  I know I was popping before, but this is unreal! My jaw even made a lot pop the other day and has been sore since then. It hurts to eat and to laugh... but we have to eat and we MUST laugh... so I'll stop the whining now. SORRY.

Thanks so much!

Michele, I think sounds more serious that what everyone else has - you need to see a doctor about pooping knees!

I also have neck and shoulder pain.  It is the worst of my pain for sure!

I think that our synovial fluid being unhealthy and even people with healthy joints create gases/air then bending/moving the joint creates a snap, crackle or pop sound when the gas/air gets pushed out.  I believe my Dr told me this but as always I could be mistaken.   I am on 15mg of hydrocodone every 6 hours(one norco 10 and one vicodine 5) and I am just STUPID right now!  Don't mind the drooling idiot over here in the corner!

I had neck and shoulder pain, too.  I've had cortisone shots in my shoulders, and surgery on one of them due to a torn rotator cuff.  I had not injured it, so it may have been related to RA.  Another cause may have been that I was so top heavy for my small frame.  So, I underwent a breast reduction a year ago, and it has helped me so much.  I stand straighter, and my shoulders don't hurt.  The cosmetic benefits of the procedure has done wonders for my whole self esteem, also!

My ankles and wrists and knuckes used to pop all the time.  Interesting that's where my RA has done the most damage.

Pooping knees lol.  That was great.  Thank you for the drooling drug induced laugh today Michelle.  I have made some horrible typos and I *must* go back and read everything I write sometimes twice lol.

Ok ok...I have a funny one Katie did lol.  Instead of typing hahahahahaha....she typed gagagagagagaga.  The things that we came up with for that one I can not repeat here.  One time I was teasing Katie about a really bad spelling error.  Then I went and typed speeling bee when I was talking about my daughter going to the spelling bee lol.

You are not alone on drooling drug induced typos lol.

LMFAO

You leave my "gaga"s alone!!

>.<

For the record, my joints have popped since I was LITTLE. Really little.

Hi, my right elbow popps when I've had it in one position and then move it (especially in bed)?? Strange, isn't it? It doesn't hurt, though.

sarah

I asked my doctor about all those snap, crackle, pop sounds the last time I was there. He said that those sounds were tendons and ligaments  moving in response to arthritic changes....they are sort of snapping like rubber bands when they are stretched and twisted. It made sense to me .....it just didn't sound really good.

Sorry to tease you Michelle - hope you didn't mind.  We all make typos and I love it when they turn out funny!

Okay, so lot's of people have popping and cracking.  I do too.  But do any of you have clunking?  LOL  I swear, my hip has been making a real deep, low clunk sound now and then, like when I lift my leg to put my pants on!  And it feels like it's popping out and back into the joint.  Has anyone else felt like that?

Just goes to prove, I NOW OFFICIALLY AN OLD CLUNKER!  so I just assumed all my popping was normal???  my 12 yr-old pops all her knuckles, toes, knees, etc.  yikes!  now I'm worried ...  she doesn't have pain.  should I do something about it? or just wait and see? No worries, I am not offended at all and I DID set you up pretty good!!

My joints all crack and pop like crazy. It started with just a few and now all the joints with arthritis do it. My rheum claims it is "not significant" but it bothers me since they never did this when I was healthy. No pooping joints yet-thank God!

Laker

No need to worry about the cracking!  My physio at the Arthritis Society said it's normal with RA and nothing to worry about.  Asked my rheumy too ... he said normal with RA and nothing to worry about.  I did some online research ... all says normal with RA and nothing to worry about.  PLUS, it doesn't at all seem indicative of disease progression.  Just really annoying!

Sweet!  Thanks for the info Joy!  Really appreciate it.

There are times tho my hubby makes the funniest faces when I get up from the couch and I am going snap, crackle, pop.

Yup, that's us ... the living Rice Krispies commercial!  Hmm, we should get cash for all the free advertising we do for them every time we stand up or turn our heads!!
