I am SO EXCITED that I have to tell everybody!!

"In early March, HR 1283, the Arthritis Prevention Control & Cure Act, was introduced and has been referred to your subcommittee on Health.

As a sufferer of Rheumatoid Arthritis, I believe this legislation is essential to combat the many different of types of arthritis that are afflicting both adults and children, which can cause disability, deformity, loss of function, and even shortened life span.

Early diagnosis, research funding and access to medical treatment is critical.

My question is: Are you a supporter or co-sponsor of this important legislation, and why or why not?"

He explained that he is somewhat overwhelmed by all the different causes in the health subcommittee and that he was not familiar with this particular act. He also said that as chairman, it is traditional that he not be a co-sponsor of legislation he may approve or edit (I didn't realize this).

However, he said it sounds like something he would support and that he is hoping with a Democrat-controlled congress that more money would go to the National Institute of Health. At the end of the meeting, he took my question so he would have the number of the bill to look into and asked for my contact information!!!

Did anyone explain why the don't? How in the world do important pieces of legislation ever come into being, without that support?

Maybe I'm just ignorant about the inner workings of our government.

Thanks,

Nini

Not sure about that, but this act currently has at least 107 co-sponsors!From my understanding, the rep for Barak Obama put it this way.  If hey sponsors or cosponsors one disease specific bill he will have to in the end sponsor all of them.  It doesnt mean that they dont think the bill should be passed.  He is however, not sponsoring it but is in support of the part of the bill that sends more money for the health agencys.  Now, just because they dont sponsor or cosponsor the bill it doenst necessarly mean that they are not in support of it or agree with it.  I had asked a friend of mine that workds for one of the agencies in Springfield IL and he said that the more sponsors/cosponsors just makes it easier to get to the next level to make the bill become a law.  The only thing we can do is keep sending letters to our congressmen/women and representives trying to get them to be in support of this bill.  THere are many aspects of the bill also.

Heres the link from www.arthritis.org showing who is a sponsor of the bill
