prednisone | Arthritis Information

When taking prednisone I notice that it only is effective for about 20 hours.  So I have a "gap" of a few hours.  This is not a "off/on" effect but a gradual loss of effectiveness before the next days dose slowly kicks in.  In other words for about 4 hours I am slowly loosing the relief for a couple of hours then slowly picking up the relief.  I experimented splitting the dose and this eliminated this "gap" but my doc told me to stop because this had the same effect on my adrenal glands as a highr dose.  I am wondering if this is common.

Sorry if my description is unclear.
HOW MUCH PRED. DO YOU TAKE?What about a "uneven" splint?  If you take 20mg maybe you can take 15mg at one time and 5mg 12 hours later?  I'd ask about the specifics.  I split mine when I flare--and the doc is the one who suggested it.

Ketch,

I had the same problem with prednisone. Generally i take the prednisone around 8:30am-9-00am. Generally around 3 or 4am most of the prednisone had warn off or at least enough for discomfort and every hour made more discomfort. The gap tho was more like 6 hours because it would take at least 3 hours for good benifit from the pred i would take at 9am thus making a 6 hour discomfort zone. I still take prednisone but i also take mtx and enbrel and so i really don't have much between doses discomfort anymore. I had the luxury of taking my pred and then trying to sleep waiting for the benifits or lying real still in an un-painful position for about three hours. Best benifit after about 6 hours, right? Also i kept a good stock of codeine and codone and still do and i cold filter both. It is a pain in the mind but well worth the time to cold filter the codeine/codone. You need to add at least one extra tablet because usually at least one amount of codeine/codone is lost in the filtering. Some times i just add a few extra just for the feeling. Remember to take your doctors advise. Your doctor is probably smarter or at least more knowledgable than any of us on this board. Are you only taking prednisone? Your description was very clear.

Levlarry what do you mean you "cold filter" your meds??  Never heard of this before - just curious.  Hugs and good vibes.

Thanks folks for the kind replys.

I have been ramping up from 10 mg mtx per week and 20 mg prednasone per day last Nov.  to now I am trying 25 mg. injectable mtx and have just, last week, ramped the pred down to 7.5 mg per day.

It's hard to define accurately the time period that the pred effect is going and then coming back.  Maybe levlarry's 6 hours is a better estimate than my 4 hours.

The reason for the question is that I am wondering if, the point in time at which the pred is least effective, would be similar to how I would feel if I was off the pred totally.

2manyaches,

Well, with the prednisone being so damaging to the stomach and the mtx killing fast growing cells which the stomach and intestines and such are made of i had extreme pain, damage to my stomach, blood in my feces. Well every codeine and codone is mixed with another drug, mine usually acetaminophen or tylonol i guess, right? Anyway, acetaminophen, aspirin and another combo they use are all very damaging to the stomach and very hard on the liver where there is no real damaging effects of the pure codeine/codone and so i usually cold filter both the codeine and the codone. I usually use it only at night and tonight i was posting here and left my codone too long in the freezer and have to start over. My stomach has been repaired and i am so glad, so much pain, i was burning holes in my stomach. You crush the codone/codeine into powder. Mix it into 2-4 ounces almost boiling water. Put in the fridge or freezer until the liquid gets below 40 degrees but not freezing. The acetaminophen solidifies but not the codone/codeine and i cold filter the liquid thru the brown natural coffee filter, drink and wait to start itching. Keep in mind that you will lose a small amount of codone/codeine so add a little extra or not, maybe i just do.

LEV

PS Tomorrow i will look in my library for the link for the cold filter recipe.

Ketch,

The time between is nothing compared to the pain of being completely off the prednisone. Delay your dose for a few extra hours and that will give you a better idea of pain totally without. Ouch, ouch, ouch.

Filtering a narcotic is a VERY dangerous practice. While it may be faster and better pain relief, taking ANY narcotic in any other fashion than the way it's prescribed is not a good idea. The Tylenol helps the codeine to safely work with your body. The potential for over dose with filtering is VERY high.

I believe, that it may also be illegal.

Ketch,

I give you my word that the police will not kick down your door for cold filtering codeine/codone. The acetaminophen is added to take away fever and swelling. I take other drugs for that purpose, mtx, prednisone and enbrel. Taking the acetaminophen away does not make the codeine/codone stronger. Druggies wish. I will say that smart druggies do cold filter drugs because liver death in druggies is very common and is caused by the acetaminophens and aspirin overload to the liver. My 30mg codeine is mixed with 300mg of acetaminophens, my oxycodone 5mg has 325 mgs of ace and my hydrocodone 5mg is mixed with 500 mg of ace. I do not need any of it. Each prescription calls for 2 tablets every 6 hours as needed. Do the math. That is alot of ace on my already burdened liver. They are opiods and they are addictive more so by people prone to addictions. The ace is not a safety feature for codeine/codone and is just a burden on the liver. Removing the ace does not strengthen the c/c. It does not make it work faster, still about 20-40 minutes. And lastly, if you are a thief, don't stand too close to the door.

The potential for overdosing with the filtering process is VERY VERY high. ketch,

One thing to remember as you drop your prednisone dose is that your body is craving it. The pain is not abnormal at all. I've been coming down from 15 mg. very, very slowly, as every time I drop, I hurt. I'm down to 3 mg. now, and every step has been painful. But your body DOES adjust. It's easier in smaller increments. After a while, the pain goes away. Then you know it's time to drop it again. I'm looking for the day when I'm on 0 prednisone and the pain is gone for good.

Please, please, don't start playing pharmacist with your meds!

Arriscolwell is absolutely correct. You are taking a terrible chance with your body! I'm sure Larry won't agree, but I would certainly not do anything with my meds, based on what someone on the internet said! I don't care who it is.

If it's not illegal or harmful to your health, why not ask your doctor about it?

Please be careful!

Nini

LevLarry why don't you simply get the codeine portion of the drug.   They do make them with the aceteminophen.  Seems like that would be a lot easier than filtering
