Are you Regular? | Arthritis Information

Ok... I have been to the urologist because of my chronic bladder infections, and he asked me how many times a week I poopooed. I told him maybe 3 times a week, and up to 3 times in a day. He told me that was not good enough that I needed to poo everyday 2-3 times a day.

So, if I may ask... anyone here poopoo everyday of the week and 2-3 times a day?

NoWell, for me telling the urologist no, he put me on something I have to mix in one of my drinks everyday. I have not done it yet, because the stuff is boxed up somewhere. But that is what ya get when you say "no"

Joonie..your diet has a whole lot to do with your lack of regularity.  Not eating regularly, not eating fiber, and not drinking plenty of water daily all can stop normal digestion and elimination

Yeah, I know that, but even when I did eat right, regularly and drinking more than my fair share of water I still did not go that many times a week.

I have been eating more lately and drinking more water, as that is all we have to drink other than juice.

I always seem to miss breakfast though I take the stuff that you still have boxed up.  It has no taste or odor to it.  Mix it up in a 4oz glass of water and just drink it.  You HAVE to be regular because it is not good for you if you are not.  It causes nasty things like colon cancer...colon polyps...etc.  And unless you would like a nice Fleets Enema...just mix the Miralax and drink it.

Muscle relaxers and pain meds do cause constipation, so you should find something gentle you can take on a regular basis, that isn't so disgusting you won't take it, LOL.

For me, my nightly dose of calcium/magnesium works very gently and naturally, and so consistently, I can have my day well planned, if you know what I mean!

I will take it starting next week. That way I can see if it helps me. Being regular doesn't have anything to do with how many times you go. Everyone is going to be different on that effect. Why don't doctors pay more attention to that. If you're going at REGULAR INTERVALS then it's "regular" hence the term. Make sense? well if this does not allow easy sliding than I will look into a stool softner something like colace (DOCUSATE) helps with when I get probs from the opiates. I would not use a regular laxative except to get the ball rolling, so to speak. I take colace daily when I am needing my stronger pain meds as they do sometimes interfere with BM's.

The SS will simply help keep you from becoming impacted. And trust me becoming impacted is something nobody wants to go through. Basically to solve the prob the begin, well, scooping ya out....EWWWWWWWW!!

BTW, if you are shooting out McNuggets there is a chance the SS will help but it's also on the road to impaction.

Oh, there is another last ditch effort to try and that is Magnesium Citrate. I buy a bottle from, of all places, the 99-cent store and keep it on hand in case I need it. I toss it out once a year if I don't. But at a buck it's handy to have in a pinch. But don't go leaving the house anytime during the 6-hrs following taking it...

BTW, ya might not wanna use any laxatives sooner then a couple hours after taking your regular meds...it's sort like just tossing them down the toilet otherwise...oops, did not mean that pun...

Yup you really don't want to get impacted, hubby had that happen after not drinking enough water when he was running, He was in misery for about a week, finally had to go to the ER and get scoooped out..ick..

Well....only once per day....sometimes twice....if I have too much coffee....that is a real laxative for me!

I have problems with constipation.  Actually, the plaquenil has helped out alot as that can cause diarrhea but keeps me from being so constipated.

Magnesium is great too.  I use Natural Calm.  It is a magnesium/calcium powder to mix and drink.  The raspberry/lemon is pretty good.  It works great too!

I have had ibs since I was 16, so no.  I was constipated for many, many years.  If you are talking about miralax, it really doesn't have a taste and you can mix it in juice if you prefer.  I took it for about 6 years.  Its not a chemical laxative.  Its an osmotic laxative, which means it works by pulling water into your colon.

For some unknown reason, I went form constipation to diarrhea about a year ago, at that pint, I was going 15-20 times a day.  Now, I go back and forth.  If I need something to loosen things up, I take the stool softeners mentioned above, some days though, I have to take lomotil to stop it up.  NOTHING is regular with my stupid body!!!

Humm... seems like everyone has different things they use.

I am going to start taking mine today. Probably with my drink at dinner time, since I cannot get the bottle open by myself, and hubby is not home.

Thanks for all the replies. I will look into the magnesium.

Once, maybe twice a day. I don't understand how water helps but it does and I use flaxseed everyday just for grins. Don't know if that helps but drugs can really wreak havoc on my system. Child of the 60's, go figure.

Usually once a day in the morning after coffee.

I use fiber. I swing back forth between diarea and constipation. Lately it is constipation from pain meds. So it is a dose of chewable fiber tabs and making a big effort to stay hydrated.

When it is the other, a double dose of fiber usually calms things down in a day or 2.

It is always something, if not 2 others.

Joonie, don't drink that crap!. It is polyproplene glycol. It is a laxitive
created in a labratory and used in many preparations. It is not grown in
your garden. If you want to do your body a favor, don't add another
chemical to the mix. Go out and buy fresh fruits and veggies, whole grain
bread (this does not mean, wheat bread), 9 or 13 or more grain. Bran
muffins, any high fiber cereal. Don't eat any grains unless they are whole. I
know I'm preaching again but don't use chemicals to regulate your bowels.
That is why we have these wonderful natural foods.

Shut up, you guys are not talking about POOP on here, are you???

I agree w/ Lorster, get some greens in yo diet girl.  I'm 75%-90% raw and don't have a single problem in that department!

Phats

Yes. I eat lots of veggies and whole grains.hmmm maybe thats my problem... I dont eat foods that are good for me, i like em all but dont eat em...i just eat really crappy...no pun intended

Urologist just wanted to see if me going everyday will help with my bladder infections. He said the 2 "plumbing lines" (his words) run parallel and that could be causing my urine to back up. Not sure... he gave me all kinds of scernerios, and he is just trying to rule things out.

Joonie, metamucil would at least be better than miralax. I cannot believe
our doctors are peddling that crap.

I do not think it is Miralax. He did not call it that. But he did say it was OTC, but he RXed it.

I do not know. I have misplaced the GIGANTIC bottle again. Hubby brought more boxes into our room so now everything is mixed up and I cannot tell what is in what box. I'm just wondering...Lorster...for us that are constipated and have tried EVERYTHING to avoid Miralax....what else can we do?  I started out with diet to try and control mine.  The good grains...the 9-13 grain bread (mmm love that stuff)....all the bran I could shove into my diet....including fiber supplements and no go.  No pun intended lol.  Mine is caused by my narcotic pain killers that slow the motility of the intestines.  Before miralax I was miserable!!  Now, I feel so much better lol.  And I can't drop the narcotic pain killers.  Sometimes when the weather is bad that is all that keeps me sane.  Plus I can't do housework without taking them first.  So any other suggestions or ideas?grammaskittles, you are the person that should be taking this. it shouuld
be used, after all other measures have been tried. I just do not feel that
our doctors educate us on what we can do to regulate ourselves, they
bring out their pens and RX pads and start prescribing.   I just wish our
system was prevention oriented and not catastrophic oriented. They wait
until this problem is out of hand, then try to fix it. Narcotics are a huge
instigator of constipation. What I wonder is why this doctor did not
prescribe metamucil to joonie or better yet, review her diet to make sure
was eating in such a way to promote good bowel health. He went right
for the Miralax. Have you tried flaxseed? You can grind it and put in your
oatmeal. That is an excellent form of fiber. Grape juice and carrots, also,
juicing is great. There are some out there that need Miralax but most of
us don't. I look at how much fiber is in everything, afterall, the more
fiber, the more of it you can eat for the calories, lol. Also, the more fiber
you take in, the lower your cholesterol will be. Fiber is what helps remove
cholesterol from our bodies. So I guess what I'm trying to say here is if
you are constipated and don't drink enough water, don't get enough
fiber, fruits, veggies, grains in your diet, try that and then if that does not
work, move upward onto something that will work. If you have tried
everything and miralax is the only thing that works, then that is what you
should do.was never regular until I started drinking smoothies.  every day I have a smoothie and i'm now as regular as clockwork.

for my smoothie into the blender I put a large banana, a handful or more of frozen summer berries, and a large glass of cloudy apple juice (has to be cloudy because its only the cloudy one that has fibre!) and blend all together for two minutes and drink.

the berries have small stones in them (raspberries, blackberries, etc) and i think this is what has the effect.

but the drink is delicious anyway.      anna_uk
Joonie, I know this is mostly about BM's, but you said it's because of your bladder infections that the dr. was concerned, so to drag this sideways with a semi-elimination post, (and don't the rest of you laugh) do you go to the bathroom, before and after you have intercourse? A girlfriend told me about this a long time ago, she got bladder infections all the time and the dr. told her to empty her bladder before she had sex and then again right after. I wasn't prone to this, but I added another neurotic step to my already neurotic life. Go to the bathroom, drink a big glass of water, make love with DH, go to the bathroom again. Just a thought.

Deidre

I have a great way to balance things out....first I had my gallbladder removed, then I added narcotic pain meds and other things that "slow you down".  Between the two, I am pretty regular!

But kids, don't try this at home.  Hang on to your gallbladder if you can. joonie, should have said this in my earlier post but forgot -- my mum had a chronic obstruction of the bowel which caused bladder infection after bladder infection.  it was only when the bowel movements returned to normal that there were no more uti's.   anna_uk
Hey, Lorster. You're totally correct in that drs. are highly skilled in using a pen and rx  pad!! Did you realize when doctors are in training they receive less than a week of training in regard to diet and nutrition? Scary...............
Yes, and doctors will readily admit this. They prescribe all these antibiotics
and then the horrid yeast infections start in and they prescribe diflucan. If
they would have started the patient on yogurt or the active capsules and
other preventative measures, the diarrhea and yeast infections would never
have been a problem. It just seems like they want to keep spending health
care dollars and not look at ways to make things easier both on the patient
and on the pocketbook. And why advise a person to eat lots of fiber when
you can write for Miralax and have a nice kick back from the pharmaceutical
company that makes it.

Humm... well... Deidre... thanks for the info. I always go pee afterwards, because I always have to go

Well, I would describe what pains I have and all, but I do not want to subject yall to it

Alls I can tell ya is I get bladder infections and do not know I have them until the horrid double you over crying for hours pain hits the lower half like where my uturus is, and then it only happens around the same time I have my "montly bill". So, I just think it is my ovaries and uturus, and then go get it checked out and bam it is a bladder infection.

*shrugs shoulders*

Brother, I never thought I would know or even want to know so much about  poop.
Thanks Guys
and only Joonie would start that kind of topic LMAO Hey, it is a part of life... you poop, ya pee, ya eat, and ya sleep. Ahhhh the life .... oh wait that is what babies do Lorster thanks for your insight on this.  I hate taking meds and take enuf as it is lol.  Believe me if I could drop this one I would.  All I drink is ice water anyways.  I don't have the taste for anything else lol.
