sulfasalazine for liver disease | Arthritis Information

I came across this article on the web about sulfasalazine being used to treat liver damage.   Thought it was interesting as most of the drugs we take orally for RA have potential bad effects on the liver.

The group already has one promising lead – sulfasalazine, used for decades for the treatment of inflammatory diseases of the gut and rheumatoid arthritis. Sulfasalazine is a potent inhibitor of NF-κB, affecting phosphorylation of NF-κB and cellular levels of IκB-a, though its exact mode of action is not clear.

The results so far have been highly encouraging: "In an animal model of liver fibrosis we have observed that administration of sulfasalazine accelerates the normally slow process of spontaneous recovery," says Professor Mann. "We saw very rapid remodelling of scar tissue back to normal hepatic tissue."

Not sure if this will work but the following is a link with a full article.
