Sulfasalazine????????? | Arthritis Information

Hi everyone -  I am hoping to get some feedback about sulfasalazine.  I am starting it tomorrow.  I will start researching it now but I really would like to know your personal experiences.  I had a severe reaction to mtx and rd told me he does not want me to take that again.  After one month on sulfasalazine, if all goes well, I am starting on Humira.

It worked well enough for me for about two years, so best of luck with it.

Hey Roxy,

I've not taken sulfasalazine but just looked it up on webmd....as you may know it is hard on your stomach.....I have taken mobic however and had to stop it because it and the prednisone was frying my stomach.... both say you should drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.....are you taking anything for your stomach?   you might try zantac 75 over the counter..I take it along with my prednisone and arava...it helps the burning in my stomach.  Stay away from acidy (new word) foods and drinks, sodas, tomatos, spicey foods etc.  Watch your stools for darkness or redness.  Seems like two meds that are really hard on your stomach....

How's the wedding plans,,, you should be concentrating on that let the RA go for awhile if you can....concentrate on happy thoughts, I know it's hard....I'm telling you this while I'm suffering a flare up...I don't know what causes these flare ups.  I feel fine one day I sh*tty the next. (Excuse the language...no other word describes.)

Hi guys,  I had to go to rheumy as I had a reaction to the mtx and we need to replace it.  I wish I didn't have to focus on this now

Well, I believe that is what I was first put on with my first time to a semi-RD...lol...that is what I call him...lol...no he was a real RD.

I found out 2 days after starting it that I was allergic to it. I broke out in hives and had to go to the ER to get a benadryl shot.

I found out I was allergic to sulfa like my mom and brother.

I do remember the doc telling me of the dehydration part and to drink lots and lots of water.

Other then that I could not tell you how it worked for me...lol was not on it long enough.

Hope that kinda helps.

Hi Roxy,

I was on sulfasalazine for probably about 4 months -didn't seem to help-I was on 3000mg. a day .I have a bad case of gerd ,I take 60 mg. of prevacid for it (double the normal dose)I had to split the sulfasalazine up in doses (as it was hard on stomach)But after 4 months of sticking to it,I came home off the road to go to RD,I could hardly move,he changed me to MTX 12.5 mg a week.I have been doing good on this. Hope info helps. It all depends on individual ,as meds react differently for everyone, hope it helps for you.sherry

Roxy;

Sulfersalazine was the first medication I took 11 years ago. I did ok with it...although it wasn't very effective for me. I stayed on it for a couple of years upping the dose and eventually adding Plaquenil.

Be cautious though with this one; it's the one that makes you super sun sensative. I got burnt bad on that one years ago. Just be aware of that.

Hope it helps!!

Lovie
