Prednisone and Weight Gain | Arthritis Information

Has anyone had any success in losing the prednisone weight while still taking 7mg or so a day?  If so, what is the secret.  I have gained 30 pounds in this last year--I have been on prednisone for the last 13 months, am starting to taper down.  But, the weight does not want to come off!  So discouraging

It is such a comfort to read about others who know what PMR is really like.

Thanks and I hope for all of you a painless day!

Marla-

I found cutting way down on salt helped me lose weight on prednisone- as prednisone causes water retention as well as an appetite stimulant.

It is a battle to lose on prednisone but it can be done. Less salt and less fat.  My daughter got married last summer and I had to lose weight for that- it worked!

At 15 - 10 mg. of prednisone, I take approx 400 mcg of chromium picolinate and 250 mcg of biotin daily.  When I was down to 5 mg. or so, I would only take that dose of chromium picolinate & biotin 2 or 3 times a week.  If you want more info, google "chromium picolinate and corticosteroid induced diabetes".  Evidently the prednisone depletes the chromium in your system, which makes it impossible for insulin to do its job properly, causing the blood sugar fluctuations.

Good luck!

Ruth
