Enbrel and dental procedures | Arthritis Information

I have had RA for 12 years, been on Enbrel 7 years (with great results!), and, periodontal disease for 20 years.  I have had a flareup of the PD, a tooth abscess, and have stopped Enbrel.  I have to have a root canal and periodontal surgery in the next 2 weeks.  Anyone have experience with how long before or after these types of procedures one should remain off the Enbrel?

Thanks for help, Sarana

call your doctor for specific advice, personally, though  I would proabably stop the meds until after the root canal.  There is just too much risk of infection with dental surgery

Not on Enbrel but I had that problem procedure  just after Christmas, abcess on a root canal.  I had to take sulphur based antibiotics (allergic to penicillin) for two weeks to clear the infection, then had the extraction.  My Oral Surgeon spoke to my Rheumy and I didn't have to stop the other meds. , Pred, MTX, Plaquenil, Brufen, Fosamax etc, I was quite surprised really, though I would have to admit was a bit nervous about that.   But all was well and had no probs. But that's not to say that would be the case for everyone of course.

I took a list of my meds & Rheumy's contact details to the surgeon for the first visit, he said he wished everyone would do that - it enabled him to check things out straight away.  Told me that lots of patients are not good at giving medication details - feel that it's an invasion of their privacy.  Hello??????  Bit risky not to I think.
Good luck with the surgery anyway.
