I have been working out since the last week in dec.I have lost 50 pounds so far.Was feeling so good.had the usually aches and pains, just ignored it.June 5th it all changed.I got very sick.Severe body pain, fatigue, nausea, stomach pain, swollen knot at base of thumb, very lethargic.

I got sick again July 4th.i did take some time off from working out to get better from the first episode.I have cut back on working out.I worked out today,we'll see how I feel tom.

I so desperately want to exercise despite the pain it's just the fatigue that keeps me from doing it.

How do others keep going despite pain and fatigue?

Sheila

Sounds like you have been doing a great job so far..

You might  talk to your doctor and let him/ her know about the pain and fatigue maybe your medication needs have changed.

try and do less....example instead of walking 20 minutes try 10 and increase it by 1 minute every other day.

I had to start my exercise very slowly..I started in February with a stationary bike  3 minutes twice a week.. now I am up to 18 minutes (9 minutes in the am and 9 minutes in the pm)3 times a week. I have taken some weeks off. I also use a rubber rope to strengthen my arms. I feel like I am ready for more so I signed up for swimming lessons.

One thing  I have read/heard over and over again is that we must exercise  to stay strong with arthritis. It helps with depression too.

hi!  maybe if anyones interested in doing a "buddy system"  for working out it might help everyone.  Id be interested in it.  Let me know

It is all well and good these experts saying that we have to keep fit and mobile in order to help ourselves! I used to go to the gym, at least three times per week doing cardio work, plus the weight machines.

My hands got so bad that I couldn't hold onto the machinery any longer, it caused too much pain for the next two days.

Now I take my meds and wait until they have kicked in, go down to the gym and do a little, then do 30 lengths of the pool since it is the only way I can do exercise without the pain.

As of today I am only affected in my hands and my feet/ankles.

I hate exercising! "Do you have a lot of pain when you exercise?" you might ask. No, it's not that. "Is your range of motion limited, so that many exercises are too difficult?" No, not that either. "Do you feel terribly fatigued after exercising, so that you avoid doing it?" No, not even that. I just never feel good when I exercise. What is this "runner's high" everyone talks about? Who are these weirdos that exercise at 6 a.m. and feel "energized" the rest of the day? Is something wrong with me that I can't get off my lazy butt and swim a few laps or do some crunches? I just wanna feel good!

I am trying to talk myself into going to the gym.It opens at 1 on Sundays. But I hurt so bad.I hurt all the time,I can't let that keep me from going.I am a bit scared too it will make me worse. My hips hurt really bad and so does my back.I just don't want to hurt more.I walk around limping,I don't want to walk in the gym limping and come out crawling.I just need to get over the fear and get back in there and pace myself. No more 1 hour runs on the eliptical and 45 minutes of weight training for a while. Will I ever get back to where I was?

I'll let you know how it goes.I am gonna go to the gym,may take husband with me for support. He was a personal trainer for a few years,he can give me some help if I need help getting out of the gym.

Take care everyone,
Sheila

At this point in my disease, exercise has been my savior. It helped me both physically and mentally. I even feel physically worse when I skip a workout. I do light weights on the machines and aerobic exercise both on the stationery bike as well as the treadmill. I have RA affecting both my hands and ankles but I try not to skip a workout unless they are really painful and even then I still do the aerobic portion of the workout.

Swimming is great. I feel disease free when I am in the water and am able to really move those muscles and joints.

I workout at my local YMCA.

I'm sorry to say I'm one who has given up trying to exercise and I have gained a ton of weight. I've lost 30 lbs in the past 1 1/2 yrs but I can't lose any more and I have to start exercising but I just haven't had the oomph. I have recently started taking provigil which has helped me a lot but right now I am lucky to be able to work. I'm hoping to move up to exercise. I'm one who doesn't feel better with exercise  and you wouldn't believe how active I was before I got sick.
