Has anyone had one and has anyone 's bones degenerated because of the pred?

I have osteopenia. Took fosamax for a while but that drug is freaking me out so I stopped. It will do that, I was told by my Doctor and I already had the Osteopenia before I got the PMR.

I'm getting Boniva infusions every three months and I don't have any side affects.

Love it, no pills.

Yes, prednisone is not going to help you with this that is for sure. I'm sorry. I worry about it too.

Kewaneeyes I had it before the pred aswell. After reading about osteocrenosis of the jaw I stopped fosamax. Freaked me out! I  will have another bone test done this year and see if I got anyworse since I am virtually off the pred. Taking Calcium magnesium Vit K and D . That is the best combination for keeping bones healthy.Oh wow off the prednisone. How wonderful!
I am taking the Calcium by means of Ultra Tums, two of those. Taking D but did not know of the K.

Thank you for that.
~KewaneeMy recent bone density test also showed osteopenia.  Although that condition was present prior to the PMR (I am 71), the rate of deterioration seemed to be faster.  As a precaution I was started on Fosamax several weeks ago without any side effects, and of course continued w/the calcium and vit D that I have been taking for a long, long time.  Have been on prednisone about six/seven months.  I hope your next bone scan turns out good!!hi, i was wondering how you guys who are on prednisone on a daily basis manage to not get osteoporosis. i have been on many high dose short bouts of prednisone in the past for asthma and now i have osteoporosis in my lower spine. i have been taking caltrate now for 3 years but my bone density continues to deteriorate even though i am no longer on prednisone

Hi allycat

I have been taking Calcichew D3 morning and evening ever since I started on prednisone. It contains calcium as well as vitamin D. I read about osteoroposis and asked my doctor, so he wrote a prescription. In Sweden we have a maximum sum for medicine during one year of  US $ 260. It is a staggered percentage. At first we pay more and yesterday I had the highest percentage of rebate. Now I have free medicin until September!

RDSwede39198.0616435185I have been on Fosamax since my last bone scan showed Osteoporosis in spine, one hip and hands.  Other hip osteopaenic.   Years ago all those parts were already osteopaenic, and that was before I ever had any RA, PMR,  Prednisone  (3 or so years now) or any of the other drugs.  I had been on Calcium supplements for years, ever since I had early menopause at 38.

I was pretty nervous about taking it too,as with the Prednisone and Methotrexate, and the Brufenm and the Placquenil, but I guess with a high fracture risk - I had to decide that it was just one more thing I had to take to keep myself together and functioning.  I didn't want to have to cope with broken things as well as the rest.

On the good side though, my nails are beautifully strong again!!  Just like the Prednisone puffs away my wrinkles!! I had a bone density test last week since I take prednisone.  No change over the past year.  I take Actonel.  Guess it works. Oh that's is to funny. What a good attitude to have.

You all should ask about the Boniva infusion. Every three months! Well, I just don't seem to get to the pills as I should. Don't like em.

Yes I'm hoping my next scan will show improvement. That may be a far stretch. I am 63 now and fear those breaks that can happen so easy and can be fatal for women sometimes depending where it is.

I'd like to know if these med's are working and which ones do not. Fosomax bothered my stomach but I saw something about jaw problems with it. Surprise. Wondering if that was Marianne. Well, we'll all see won't we in time? The Boniva is the easiest thing I've ever done. That's me. But I'm looking forward to seeing how successful it is in preventing or helping this condition with the bones.

Have a nice hopefully less painful day Gmama and all.

Hmmm, think I'll take a wait and see attitude. To new and I wouldn't want to be one of those that get's a drug recall a year later.
