Yesterday I visited the dentist to get a permanent crown placed and a
cleaning and chekup...and guess what, no cavities, yah!!! But....then when I
got home, I was stiff, all my joints ached and felt fluish. I felt really good
prior to this. The same thing happened the last time I went. So, there is
definitely a systemic reaction to this. I'm wondering if antibiotics prior to
the visit would be necessary. I had rheumatic fever as a child so I'm thinking
I should request it. Does anyone else experience this when visiting the
dentist?Good news on your dentist appointment. I have to have antibiotics before any dental work because I have Mitral Valve Prolapse which is a leaky valve in the heart. The reason you need this with dental work is that all that bacteria is released throughout your body and can get you very sick. In MVP, it can cause an infection in the heart called Endocarditis which is very serious. MVP is not much of a problem except for this.
So, asking for antibiotics before each visit might be a good thing to do.
Lorster I also had just hit the begining of Rheumatic Fever as a 4 yr old and they took my tonsils and adenoids at that time. I always took Penicillin prior to any dental work because of it. I now have dentures (thank God).
Great news you didn't have cavaties!
I was told to ask for antibiotics prior to going to the dentist. I have also heard that some docs say you don't need them. I wish they would give a firm answer on this.
Thanks for all your replies. I'm going to request them before every
