Interactions with Ibuprofen | Arthritis Information

I was watching that Tylenol commercial last night and it was saying that
Ibuprofen interacts with high blood pressure medications so I was
surprised
to see online that it interacts with more than just blood pressure
medicines.
Have our doctors ever told us this? Probably not.
I took this info off of an Ibuprofen site.

What drug(s) may interact with Ibuprofen?
•alcohol
•anti-inflammatory drugs (other NSAIDs, prednisone)
•aspirin and aspirin-like medicines
•cidofovir
•cyclosporine
•entecavir
•herbal products that contain feverfew, garlic, ginger, or ginkgo biloba
•lithium
•medicines for high blood pressure
•medicines that affect platelets
•medicines that treat or prevent blood clots such as warfarin and other
'blood thinners'
•methotrexate
•pemetrexed
•water pills (diuretics)I think it might be because ibuprofen has high liver toxicity. There are more
liver failures from ibuprofen than mtx. I was told at arthritis school that
overuse of ibuprofen is the leading cause of liver failure, but I can't
remember if they included alcohol use in that assessment. So it's either the
leading or second leading cause, with alcohol being the other one. hm, are you sure?  as I understand it, it's acetaminophen (tylenol) that affects the liver.  ibuprofen affects the kidneys/stomach. hula39202.4831828704No, I'm not sure. I often get information I obtained by listening instead of reading mixed up, and I do know acetaminophen is toxic to the liver, so that could be the liver failure culprit. So please disregard my post! I should probably delete it but that would make your post a non-sequitor. Tylenol is one of the leading causes of liver faiure in people of all ages right
now. And I'm sure alcohol thrown into the mix does not help that. I guess I
know that Ibuprofen can wreak havoc on the GI system, I didn't realize how
toxic it was to the liver itself. I guess it is all part of getting more informed
of what we are taking. Think I'll stick to my flaxseed.Well, that sucks. My RD told me to keep taking them and the amount was fine. I eat those things like tic tacs - 4 at a time. You need to really watch that especially if you are also consuming any
tylenol. The combo is not good on the liver. Now we have to be even more
careful with all the other meds we take. That's interesting too, since they tell you to double up Ibu with Tylenol when your little ones have fevers. I know that's what my mom and all her friends did with us kids growing up. It was the "magical" combo to make everything better. yeah katie, we do this all the time with the kids in the hospital. and i have to
follow the doctors order and certainly cannot speak my opinion or i could be
in big trouble. parents need to take a stand when it comes to their kids
health and well being.NOOOO, I never take tylenol, unless I'm really in pain and don't have access to anything else and even then I sometimes skip it. But these days I take a small bottle of ibuprofen in my purse when I go ANYWHERE.

Yeah, I feel damned if I do and damned if I don't with my Ibuprofen.  I always had normal blood pressure until I had my original pain issues tied to my hypothyroidism.  Now I am prescribed 800mg. of Ibuprofen, 4 times a day and my blood pressure is still high, in spite of taking two different types of medications to lower it.  One rheumy told me take the ibuprofen sparingly, only if I really needed it, and the other told me to "embrace" it, take it regularly to keep it at a constant level for better pain relief!

I couldn't make it through a single day of being a functioning human if I didn't have the ibuprofen.  And tylenol doesn't do anything for my pain.  Naprosyn, etodolac aren't effective either - just the good old ibuprofen.  So I guess that will be my pathetic version of living life in the "danger zone". LOL!

Those are the reasons I don't take Ibuprofen or Acetominophen.  I'll stick to my Tramadol.  Easier on my stomach and liver according to the research.  Haven't had a problem with becoming addicted and they do take the edge off the pain.  I'm saving my liver and stomach for the big gun drugs if I need to add more to the arsenal of meds I'm already taking.

My GP told me not to take any ibuprofen products (pills/gells etc) while I was on NSAID's because there was a high risk of overdose.

The meds we take all interact with each other to some degree, I think we and our doctors just have to weigh up the risks carefully, take any precautions we can and be watchful for any problems.

I can't do ibuprofen because of my high blood pressure meds and the methotrexate.  I can't do tylenol because of the acetominophen in my percocets.  I used to do A LOT of both before they put me on dmards and biologics.  I sure hope my kidneys and liver hold out!!Well, what caught my attention in the commercial was the Tylenol company
(who is out to sell their product) was saying that certain blood pressure
medication interacted with ibuprofen. I'm on Nadolol for migraine
prevention with is an antihypertensive(beta blocker). that is why I looked it
up. But I found out that it is the ACE inhibitors that it interacts with. I just
cannot seem to find out why (what problem occurs). The web sites I visited
just didn't go into that detail. I will look at the PDR at work next time to find
out. Then I came across the list that to me was extensive and it shocked
me. My doctor has never told me this, nor has the pharmacist. It just goes
to prove that we need to question all meds we are on the make sure that
there is not an interaction going on somewhere. What is the American equivalent of Panadol or Panadine?
