Just got back from a walk | Arthritis Information

Can't believe it.  I walked a mile this morning.  I know that's not far, but it was huge for me.

I used to play 12-14 hours of racquetball a week, then could barely walk around the house.

I'm gaining weight from the Prednisone and lack of exercise, I have zero energy but know that If I can exercise a little, I may have more energy.  So, I begged my husband to go out this morning at 4:30.  He did, but got grumpy when 1 mile was enough.  He usually does a 4 mile loop when he walks.  I tried to explain that I haven't done anything since November and I have to build up my tolerance, but I could tell he was annoyed.  Oh well.....I DID IT.  It was huge for me.

Well done Debra, your hubby will understand soon enough, its hard for them, but well done for your walk, take it easy though, how long have you been on pred and how long since diagnosis, I have gained weight etc, used to be an athlete, and now do next to nothing, I am currently in a plaster cast due to a fracture in my foot from constant pred for 7 years.  I was walking about 2.5 km twice a week but the Dr deemed this too much, then I spent all day Easter Sat preparing food in the kitchen and thats when I started to feel pain, so please be careful, do not overdo it on your good days like most of us do, as we pay for it afterwards.  Please let me know how you are and your background with this disease.  Kind regards Janie.   Go Girl, well done.

Well done Debra

A mile sounds pretty good to me for a first go since November. I started swimming again a few weeks ago after an absence of about 5 months and was surprised by how quickly I tired - I'm not exactly channel standard anyway LOL, but I love it and hope to build up again. Oh and I walk there so that's that bit taken care of That is great!!!  Baby steps...baby steps!!!  You go girl!!  Congrats!!!

Awesome!  Keep up the great work!

To some people a mile is a huge distance, esp. when everything hurts.I say well done to youOh man, that is quite a ways. Feel proud of yourself that you did that. that
motivates me to maybe get out and do something today. good jobWow a mile is awesome for just starting out!  That is a huge accomplishment - Congratulations!

Congratulations!  I hear you on the energy thing.  I've been thinking of doing the same thing in hopes of regaining some energy.  But I think I'll start with an old Recumbent bike in the den.  I'm not quite as adventurous as you.

Enjoy your triumph!

Thank you for the support!  I was so excited that I decided my butt will be out tomorrow morning too.

Janiefx, I have Mixed Connective Tissue Disease; Lupus, Rheumatoid, Raynaud's and Sjorgrens.  I saw my rheumy for the first time in December.  He put me on Prednisone, 20 mg and about 6 weeks later added in MTX.  He started low on the MTX 7.5 once a week but has boosted it up to 20 mg. a week.  He also dropped the prednisone to 10 mg. a day.  I still feel like I have the flu, still very tired, still losing hair, still swollen, still have stiff joints.  I'm just not happy with gaining weight and having tight clothes.  I also know that when I exercised, i had more energy.  With that said, I also know that if I do too much (which isn't a lot) I pay for it for days now.  This is why I thought that 1 mile is a good start for me.  I really have no intentions of adding more to that until I can really walk at a brisk clip and not have too much pain/fatigue later.  I also work at a physical therapy office and the PT's have told me that if I can do exercise it will benefit me in the long run.  It will help with not losing too much range of motion, etc.  I hope to add weights in later....for now, a walk, light stretching.

I'm just pumped.  Honestly I couldn't have done that even a week ago.  I think the MTX is finally kicking in.

Again, thanks for understanding.  Part of me wanted to whack my husband, but I'm sure it's hard for him too.  I alrady asked him if he'll walk tomorrow morning with me...he can always keep walking longer.

Hi Dk, Oh, i'm so happy for you. the walking, the mtx working, very uplifting! I got to play golf with my husband today (walked the course, no carts for me) It was one of the best days of my life. Warm, sunny, birds singing.....boy, I've missed beein' out in the fresh air and sunlight. Maybe we're all on an upward slope, maybe we'll all get better. SarahWell Ms. Debrakay...you have inspired me to get off my rump and "GET OFF MY RUMP." lol

Thanks! [QUOTE=Debrakay]
