Managing Enbrel or Humira on the move | Arthritis Information

Hi, My name is Niall, this is my first post. I have been living with Ankylosing Spondylitis for the past 10 years now and have been taking Humira for almost 3 years now. While this has been an absolute wonder drug for me and has transformed my life completely it has been a real pain trying to keep it cold while on the move.
I was planning to go traveling for a year but due to the fact I need to keep my medication cool I have decided to put off the trip.

My question is simple, are you my fellow sufferers confined to their countries because they cannot travel due to the temperature sensitive needs of their medication!
Does anybody have any good ideas on how to keep Humira or Enbrel cold while traveling? I dont really trust the cool pack I got from my pharmacist.

I am a college student and this problem area has led me to do one of my final year projects on developing a device for people like us to carry their meds around.

I would really appreciate any feedback you could post me back. I also attempted to create a survey, see link below. If anyone has a few minutes to spare I would appreciate any attempt you make to fill it out. I probably will put it in my appendices to back up my findings.

Hope to hear from you all, very soon

Hi Niall,

I'm sorry you haven't had a rply yet, it's abit late but here's what I do.  I put my Humira pen in a cool bag, the small lunch type, with an ice pack that's wrapped in kitchen roll or tissue. This usually keeps it cool for about 6-8 hours depending on the ambient temperature. If you can make sure you will always have access to a fridge that stores between 2 & 8 degrees celcius you should be fine. Best person to have a word with is a Humira nurse, you can get advice at www.humira.com, they can also send you a free starter pack with a special  wallet and ice pack that keeps the humira cool.

take care,
Lynne

I traveled to Europe for a month with Enbrel.  I just kept asking for ice or a place to refreeze my ice pack or even a fridge at the hostel to stick the enbrel in while I was there.  Yeah, it was a pain but every place I went was happy to help out.  Don't let this keep you from traveling - AI diseases already rob us of so much.  Taking a year's supply would be a challenge but maybe if you are going to be in one place for a while you could get a fresh supply shipped to you or find a source there.
