my daughter just got dx with r/a and is on embrel..going to Ecuador next wk on semi mission trip with school....am concerned it is rainy season there now...has anyone been there this time of yr with above dx...any increase in disconfort of ra during this time????..thank youGosh, I would be scared of her catching something because of the lowered
immune system. Like Malaria or something. How long has she been on
Enbrel? Has she caught any colds or anything so far? Will you be able to
refrigerate it and do you have enough for your whole stay?

Any little cold or flu can turn into pneumonia for us so please watch her
carefully for any sickness. It can turn serious quick.

Beeit depends on the place she is going to stay..cause if she is going to stay in the forest...i do not recommend she goes but if she stays in Ecuador in a hotel thatīs ok cause they have a lot of fancy hotels and facilities...they dont have malaria as beebee said...is latin america not Africa!

Mari, talk with your daughter's primary care physician and RD about tropical diseases.  We spend 5-6 months of the year at our place in La Pineta, Mex. on the coast 40 miles North of Puerta Vallerta.  I made it through last year with only one complication - a intestional bacterial infection that lasted almost a month.  Also, there are tropical diseases that are inherent to certain areas and the CDC routinely gives advisory warnings to travelers on shots that should be given.  She'll also be exposed to fungal infections, malaria, dengue fever, etc.  Because I'm on Remicade and MXT I've been told not to go to the tropics because of the multi diseases present and my suppressed immune system.  So until I'm off biologics no more tropical paradise for me.

And yes, there is malaria through out the tropics, it's not just an "African disease" and the CDC can give you complete information on the diseases that are in the area where she'll be staying.  Please contact them before she leaves.

I'd worry more about the suppressed immune system from Enbrel than pain because of rain.

Another caution about her going to a different country.  You must have immunizations when you travel to a different country.  I do not know which ones will be specific to Ecuador and what part of Ecuador she will be in, but, she **CAN NOT HAVE LIVE VACCINES!!**  She MUST get a list from the CDC and find out what her vaccines are and if any of them are live vaccines.

I too would be more worried about what she might catch if she goes over there since diseases and germs are different and we do not have vaccines for everything.  And yes, she would probably feel the effects of all the humidity and the rain if it is rainy season there when she goes.  But it depends on how she feels the effects of those now of how she might feel there.

Here is a travel site with lots of information, including Marlaria in South
America.   Eeekk, sounds scary.

There are doctors that specialize in travel and the US Gov has websites too.

Really, the diseases she could catch are much more serious than feeling
more pain in the humidity.
