Preddy meets South Beach | Arthritis Information

Well here is what I am wondering. I started the South Beach diet on Monday in an attempt to lose the 60 pounds I have gain on Pred. I have been on pred for 15 months now and I am down to 10mg. a day. My question is can you ever loose weight while taking pred? I am following the diet and having all ther major HUNGER pains...My friends on the diet tell me they don't get hungry on it. You do get to eat a lot of food, but still this is pred we are talking about here. I would appreciate your input, many thanks, Rain

Hi and congrats for starting the diet.  Yes, it's Pred. talking and telling you that you're starved and may never see food again so you'd better eat everything in the house.  Been there, done that.  If I can get down to 8mg. daily the cravings disappear.  You may just have to bear with it until you can taper a little more.  I tapered to 5mg. and lost an easy 25 lbs. but then I had to up to 10mg. and I've gained 18 lbs. back.  Good luck.  I'm trying also.

i agree, getting down to 5 mgs, of pred really helps. 10 is so, so on the cravings, you have to be careful. Good luck, one pound or even staying even and then 1/2 pound is going in the right direction while on pred. I wonder if there is some way to 'curb' this appetite? Does anyone know? Tea, that's what I've found I can drink all day and it fills in the urges...but, I still 'want' to eat! love, sarah

exercise exercise exercise.

Even if it means going for a short walk, or going up and down the stairs a few times.  If your body is going to start adding weight due to meds, make it work for you.

I know it isn't the same as being on pred regularly, but when I had a pred pack a few weeks ago, I actually lost a pound a day for no reason at all.  I think my body chemistry is a bit wacky to say the least...I'm finding when I don't feel well, the pounds just add on, and yet when I'm feeling better, they just drop off.  No change in diet or exercise.

Good luck on starting the South Beach program and I hope it works for you!

Thank you all so much. Today seems to be a ltille better. It is a "catch 22". Pred makes life livable, but weight puts more strain on the joints, exercise is great if you can get through the fatique. Before RA 15 months ago I had never taken a med. I worked out every day doing yoga. I was a fitness instructor for 8 years, and I loved walking. Now I gratful to be "up and around". Still hoping for a cure..everyone take care.

What I've always seen is that if you eat normally on pred, meaning don't eat more than you would have before you took it, and exercise, you can actually lose weight easier on pred.

I gained about  20 pounds on pred the first time I was on it. I got off and lost the weight, then the second time I was on it I realized  I was  just craving food, I didnt need it, so I just continued eating normally..  I figured   why on earth should taking  some medicine to help my joints  become  permission to eat foolishly?

I would no more sit and eat a package of cookies, or a quart of icecream than I would sit and stab myself with a  compass point.. I've lost  42 pounds in the last  18 months, even without  real exercise.. Even just walking is too hard. the last 8 pounds I lost giving up  my french vanilla cappuchino.. I was drinking at least  2  (20 ounce)nearly every day. I cut back to maybe 1 a week.

I KNOW its hard to lose weight. I've been heavy for a long time. but   dont let pred  rule you.

Good for you, Kathy! Kudos! And you're right, it is hard...really hard. I lost 20 pounds after going vegetarian. Now that I've gone vegan, I hope to lose the other 15-20 I need to get where I want. We'll see! [QUOTE=h2osign]

I just wanted to share some information that I learned last month about a
high protein diet. I don't know much about the south beach but if it is a
high protein diet and you are eating a lot of animal protien, it can be hard
on your kidneys. A high protein diet such as atkins can cause a nice fast
weight loss, but not a sustainable one. High protein, (animal protein) is
really hard on the kidneys and the kidney foundation is trying to make
America aware that this is becoming a big problem in america. You are
best to eat healthy food, all the time, rather than a super restricted
calorie diet. It is amazing how much good food you can eat at the tune of
1500 calories.(Don't eat less than 1500 a day) You are better off going to
lean animal proteins, not much of them, the kidneys can only handle 4 oz
of animal protein a day), more vegetable protein and tons of grains and
fruits and vegetables. Nuts are really good too. I don't really diet, just
eat healthy and have lost 35 lbs in the past year. Just a suggestion. I've been following WW and I can't lose anything. I was on just 5mg of Pred for 2 months. ( this is day 4 off of it...) Maybe it's even different for each of us? Of course my thyroid is wacky because of the Graves too....so that might have something to do with it.
