Do immunosuppresant drugs and/or prednisone cause spontaneous bruising? I get small odd shaped bruises near veins in my legs. They start purple/red and then the next day are faded to light brown and are larger, as if they spread. I suspect they are from bleeding veins. I was sitting in a chair yesterday and actually watched one appear on my hand. Today it is hardly visible but unusually painful. I asked my doc about these and he said it is from prednisone but I am on only 5 mg now. I think it is more likely from vasculitis. Anyone else have this and was it from meds?

Laker

Laker, since being on Pred. I bruise really really easily. I am currently on 8mg.  Even a ring will sometimes bruise my finger (dark purply red splotches) and the slightest tap that sometimes I am not aware of will bruise arms and legs. Always catching my legs or thighs on drawers or corners of furniture, etc, and rewarded by the same type of bruising that you describe, that seem to grow, darken, and take an age to go away, but not usually painful.

My skin is also very thin, and quite often get a skin tear which takes a long time to heal. .  Prednisone (as well as aging) does thin the skin and these are known problems. Some of the other drugs may also have this effect.

I think we need to wear protective clothing like cricket gear LOL!

That makes me feel better- thanks. I have so many odd skin issues, discoloration, rashes etc. that it always makes me a little nervous when anything "new" happens.

Laker

I bruise really easily on pred.  And on the mtx.  The pred and mtx cause your blood to thin..hence the easy bruising.  I think nsaids also cause easy bruising.

Speaking of skin...summer is coming and can anyone recommend a good sunscreen with moisturizer in it?  I need like a high SPF since I am pale to begin with and fry and peel.  Now I guess I have to be more careful on the mtx.

This is my arm after years and years of prednisone. At this time I'm on 10 mgs. I get skin tears easily too . My legs and other arm look the same.

Kathy

Oh dear Kathy - you do have it badly don't you.     Makes mine look very insignificant indeed    - I really feel for you.

93kathy10,

I hope you don't mind that i lightened your picture. Just makes it easier to see.

LEV

Wow!  Your arms look sore.  I have lots of bruising, but nothing like you have.  It seems like you can look at me and I bruise.

Phats

What a nasty drug

Kathy,

My father in law is like that too. He takes Mdthotrexate for RA. I djdn't know so many drugs do that. Is it painful?

Laker

I bruise easily on my knees but nothing like that. I have never been on pred. and i have turned down the offer to start it, it really scares meYikes, I too bruise very easily but nothing like that. They are painful when they happen - they just don't fade away! But they are not painful now. The white spots are scars.  I fell on my face a year ago in December and I still have a bruise under each eye from that!

Never taking prednisone again. Ever. I'm so sorry that it's done that to you!

I notice that I tend to bruise more when I am on my Humira. I do not bruise as much with being on just pred. I started my Humira back again about 3 shots ago and now I have 4 bruises, but I did not have any bruises until I took my Humira. But my bruises do not hurt. I do not even know I have them until someone points them out to me.

Kathy - I am sorry pred has done that to you. MaeMae...that could very possibly be normal since the mtx thins your blood.  Hence causing bruising.  You should have seen my arms from the all the tape and IV sticks I had when I was in the hospital.  It looked like my husband beat me up!

I bruise easily, which concerns my doctor. He runs a clotting test at least once a year just to make sure my blood is clotting properly. So far it is! Some people just bruise a lot more easily than others and things like pred. can make them even worse.

I can bruise from just resting my elbows on my thighs! Most of the time I have no idea where they come from. Some hurt, most don't.

Another implication of these drugs is it not only makes the skin friable, but
also the vessels. It is difficult to start an IV in these people when they come
to the hospital. If you are on pred, and it takes 10 times to get an IV, that
only lasts a few hours, that is why. One more reason to try to avoid this
med.
