Feet swelling and flying | Arthritis Information

Hi All,

Anyone experience this?  Here's the poop:  Following a 2 hour bus ride I took a 7 hour flight a couple of weeks ago.  About 3 hours into the flight I could feel my feet starting to swell as I sat scrunched in my economy seat.  I found relief by walking around, then elevating them after the flight attendant found me a jump seat with a bump in front that I could stretch out on.  Not most comfortable position, but HUGE improvement fo my feet.

It took a couple of days for my feet to return to normal, but I was so relieved that they did!  Interestingly, the flight home 2 weeks later was fine.

Talked to my rheumy yesterday and he agrees that it was the RA doing it's nasty thing -- aggrevated by the change in pressure.

More RA weirdness!!
It's fairly common for feet to swell on long flights.  It happens to my mom who doesn't have RA all the time.Ah, that's interesting.  Didn't happened to me before RA, but I'll plan for it now.  Easy to blame everything on RA.

I have problem with feet swelling and pain on trips or even sitting for a while.  I found a plastic collapsible small stool at bed, bath and beyond. it folds flat, has a handle and is very light.  I take it everywhere with me,it has saved me a lot of pain and swelling, it only cost about

thats a problem that happens to many people, with or without RA

I never had this problem before RA but my last two trans-pacific flights have resulted in HUGE amounts of swelling on the way TO America.  Oddly enough, not on the way back to Australia.  These are my feet normally.

and the trip I took to Canada about 2 years ago.

Compression socks!  You can get them at your local pharmacy.  I wear them a few days each week to work even to help keep the swelling down!

Oh yeah Joy...I have a major problem with my ankles and knees swelling.  I can't sit or stand for very long without it starting to get very uncomfortable.  I was on a 3-hour flight one time and by the time we landed I couldn't walk.  Even at movies I have to readjust and sometimes even stand up and walk for a moment.  It's ridiculous but it is what it is.

Pammy, all I can say is "OUCH"

Peace & Love....Neasy

Hi , those spaces between your toes looks familiar. Mine just go in any old direction, too.  I had swelling, stiffness on long car rides (through the heat of the Sacramento Valley, in Calif.), so it would seem sitting, too long may be contributing. Ice might help? After the flight...your ankles are for sure acting up, another place to worry you. good luck! sarahcompression socks or ultra support hose.  and lots of water ....  nothing with caffeine.  also, no salty snacks!  walking and elevating feet helps. compression sox are hot and awful, how can anyone wear them? Well I live in California and it is 70 degrees here right now. SarahI do all the right things when I fly and it has only been the last 2 times that this has happened.  It took almost 2 weeks for the swelling to go down each time.  Its big sqishy pitting edema, not really painful but uncomfortable and hard to wear shoes.
