Gained it all back! | Arthritis Information

Hi all, how depressing. I'd lost weight , by starving myself, and then felt so awful I had to start eating again. This prednisone really plays with your mind, your life, your weight.....So, I'm going to start over again and be more moderate. Lose more slowly, and try to feel better while I'm at it. sarah

I was at my doctor's office today & weighed 185 lbs.!! An all time high for me.  I've gained at least 10 lbs on the prednisone and it's only been 4 1/2 months.

On the pred I crave entirely different foods -- cinnamon rolls, pasta, ice cream....stuff I have always liked but seldom indulged in.

I keep saying I'll start a diet, but haven't had any luck yet.  I think exercise may be the only answer, but I'm not sure how much I can do.

Hopefully someone may have some suggestions??

Thanks

Hurts. when you try to lose weight by starving yourself...your body goes
into starvation mode and hangs on to every pound you have thinking that
you will not feed it again. The best way to lose is to eat many very small
meals through out the day to keep your metabolism active and efficient.   6
small meals is best. If you starve, you will lose, but gain it all back and
more. This is why so many people fail at diets. A one pound a week loss is
easy to do and will stay off way longer.

Sorry Hurts

Yeah I would not try to loose weight by straving myself. I know... I do it, but not intentionally. When I got bumped down to 5mg of pred it made me not feel like eating and I would forget to eat. I mostly forget to eat when I am busy or inflammation and pain is acting up.

I have lost 8lbs since being dropped to 5mg of pred. I am going to see if my RD will take me off pred completely because I do not want to go up to 15mg which is what only seems to help me, and the 5mg is not even helping me anymore, if anything it is making me more inflammed.

I hope you find a diet to help you lose the extra pounds you want to get off.

Best of Luck!

Hi.. I know what its like to be so hungry during the pred.. a few years ago I was up to 212...  I was so disgusted..

Little by little I started to lose.. I got a kick start when I had heart failure and ended up in the hospital for a week, and lost 15 pounds. ( I dont recommend that method)

The first time I was on pred I gained, so was back up... I lost a little when I went off, but didnt really lose a lot til my attitude changed.

I KNOW  you get hungry on pred, but its a LIE..the pred is lying to you..It's sayng  ""eeeeeaaaatttt I MUST have cheezies and ice cream.. " well, no you DONT have to eat that stuff.

you have so much self control.. you have shown it just by dealing with this disease.. Just insist   to  the pred, sorry nope you cant have it.. I know its hard.. but   if you  stop  eating even some of the extra crap  you wont gain so much..  (its funny how we dont crave broccoli, steamed rice and a   bit poached  salmon isnt it)

I lost the last 8 pounds  by giving up my  20 ounces of cappuchino every day.. I'm now drinking MAYBE 20 ounces a week.

tips..  dont go into the kitchen after 7 pm.

dont have ice cream in the house

take up an activity where you need both hands so you cant hold food.

keep the dishes washed so you dont want to dirty a plate.

put post it notes up saying "its LYING"

My husband is starting a walking program sponsored by his corporation.
The program was designed in Austrailia. Today he picked up his pedometer.
I was reading an insert about the progam. They were saying that a cup of
hot chocolate takes over 13000 steps to walk off. so much for my hot
chocolate.

When on pred it is weight gain I dread.  I can not wait to be off of this stuff and drop my pred weight.  I have done pretty well lately with cravings since my dose dropped down.  I can not stand the seefood diet that pred gives you.

It isn't a diet necessarily that you have to go on.  It is a complete change of lifestyle that has to incorporate eating right and exercise.  Eating right can be hard to do on pred sincce there are so many insane cravings.  I do try to stock up on the healthy stuff but it doesn't work ut all the time I will eat the healthy stuff.  I am spoiled rotten and if I ask hubby for something, he gets it for me.  ENABLER!!!!  LOL!!

I am getting a low impact yoga program and since my cravings are gone finally, a complete change of lifestyle is in order.

I'm right there with ya! Last fall I was losing weight well. Then I found out I had Graves...then the meds they put me on made me go hypothyroid (gained 17 pounds in Jan.)...started getting that moving in the right direction and then I get the RA diagnosis....so then I'm on the Pred--but really for me I didn't notice much difference in my appetite on the 5mg of Pred. On the 10mg I've noticed some...but if I really want to, I can control the cravings. It's hard when you don't have good self control though!

We're all in this together I guess! Slowly but surely.....

The only thing I have to add is:

THANK GOD FOR BLUE BUNNY, NO SUGAR ICE CREAM!!!!!  Even though I'm on 10mg of Pred. I've lost 13 lbs by eating many small meals a day, cutting fats and carbs, and eating Blue Bunny when I get those cravings.  Those cravings will not jinx my diet.  My goal is 50 ugly pounds gone.

Blue Bunny?!! I've never heard of that , is that in the East? Wow, I'll be looking for it.  Reducing carbs would help, but our eating habits are real carbohydrate oriented. Spagetti , with french bread, with cake, with ice cream.  You get the picture, not too many salads, in my life. I try, but it just doesn't work out very well.  I'll get back on it! Thanks, Sarah
