does anyone else get cold sores from immuno suppressants such as arava or methotrxate. since i have been on these medications i have had re-occuring cold sores. its really annoyingAre you taking Folic Acid - helps to prevent hair loss and mouth sores etc (we call them ulcers here) if taking Methotrexate??   It is usually prescribed with MTX.  I don't really know if it means cold sores as well, as I only got the ulcers inside my mouth on my tongue, but I'm sure someone else will know.  Cold sores are usually caused by herpes virus, but who knows.  Current treatment here for cold sores is Zovirax cream, but yours may be caused by medication.

I hope you get an answer soon - poor you - not pleasant
i was taking folic acid before when i was still on methotrexate. but i had to go off it recently and only take arava now. i used to get cold sores as a child but i think because my immunity is supressed there is a chance to get all sort of infections. i know of others who continually get urinary tract infections. i think i would rather the cold sores. they are really itchy and ugly. i will ask my doc next time if folic acid would help.Take the folic acid. I'm on Arava, off metho, but I haven't had any problems with them since starting the arava. Some on this board may have heard of a mouth rinse that helps with cold sores. I can't remember the name but I know theres one out there. The mtx takes quite awhile to get our of your system and you might want to take that floic acid again for a bit.  I bet it would help out lots.  thanks everyone for your help. i think i still have some folic acid . i will go back on it straight away.Allycat. If what you are describing are really cold sores from the herpes 1
virus, one thing you can do is take daily lysine. I cannot remember what the
dose is but I bet you can look it up on the internet. Also, lysine opposes
arginine so don't eat foods that are high in arginine like chocolate and nuts
while you are having an outbreak. There are meds like valtrex that you can
take. When you first feel the cold sore, take the one time large dose of
Valtrex and it will quickly subside. Ask your doctor about valtrex or famvir
or one of the others that are out there. They work wonders.
