Is this something you do in USA at a certain time of year?? I see a lot of posts mentioning going to these..  I think they are a good idea.We have car boot sales here and jumble salesOk I have to ask, whats a car boot sale? Pretty much in the US people have yard sales in the good weather. A lot of people have them in the spring/summer so as to clean out a years worth of stuff from the house and garage. What is a jumble sale?A car boot sale, is where you take your car with all your unwanted items to a big field ( it costs about £8.00 a car) and sell your stuff out the boot of your car or you can put up a table next to your car to display your items.A jumble sale is normally held in a church or school hall, its where you donate your stuff to raise money for a good cause and people come and buy your unwanted goods.....Boot sales are held every sunday, we had one a few years back and made £200.00

Lisa the boot sale sounds like the same sort of thing we do here and call them flea markets or swap meets.  Also your jumble sale sounds like a rummage sale.

I live in a quirky area of the country where what others call yard sales or garage sales is called "tag" sales.  From my experience I only have heard that term in Connecticut.  Is anyone else familiar with it?

I think the springtime is the most popular time to have a sale, since folks are doing the spring cleaning and wanting to get rid of unused items, and the weather is finally warm enough to hold them outside so you don't have strangers coming into your home.  No matter what they are, I love them!  I need a bumper sticker that says "CAUTION - I brake for Tag Sales!"

My neighborhood as one about twice a year. Everyone sets up tables in the driveway and sale their old stuff. I haven't participated yet but I plan to eventually.

I rarely go to them; but the times I have I've gotten good stuff. Folks in around here get up early on Saturday's and go. They love it! Junk collectors mostly. Not really my thing.

I guess you don't watch Antiques Roadshow either Lovie!  It's like treasure hunting.  I want to be like the people I see on the Roadshow who buy something for .00 and find out it's worth ,000!  I'm looking for that diamond in the rough.

I'd rather spend my Saturday morning combing the nurseries for that perfect plant and diggin in my garden the rest of the day. My Grandmother use to love that show though....I do know the show.

OUCH - Your grandmother used to love that show. . .

LOL

We are planning on having another yard sale this weekend or next weekend. Not really sure, depends on the weather.

Hey now! Me and hubby watch that show when we find it on. We also like the show Cash In the Attic and some other show.Just love that Antiques Roadshow as well!!

In NZ we have garage sales, jumble sales and car boot sales as well.
Garage sales are really popular, and people take off early in the morning to do the rounds.  Not me though, I hate to get out of bed early on a Saturday morning!!

Since the advent of the internet though, and selling things online, I think that the old traditional garage sales etc are losing their popularity.  NZ'ers love Trade Me, which is kinda our Ebay - only going for a few years, started off by a very young man, who sold it to Google recently for several million dollars.  I have a friend who buys things at garage sales and second hand shops, and then sells them on Trade-Me.  She makes a nice little profit.

Craft markets are still very popular though, and I love going to those.

We call them attic, garage, and yard sales here in N.C. My sis-in-law did it for a living and would make 6 to 8 hundred a weekend! I always gave her my used "stuff" to sell  cause I was to lazy to haul it in and out of the basement. lol. I used  to get up early and go on Sat. mornings but I like to sleep in now. Ebay is my thing ,I get everything there and don't even have to get dressed

I get all excited when I jump in the car and head out to garage sales. My neighbor comes sometimes and we have a ball.

Once my son asked me to buy him a Honda Lawn mower (really!? I ddidn't know honda made lawn mowers!!) WELL, the very next Saturday there in a man's yard sat a HONDA lawn mower (), my son loved it and finally after years bought a brand new one for himself.

I look for mostly practical things, like new toasters for , or last saturday I bought a huge jade plant in a lovely planter for my front porch..... I've gotten so many great things (aqua leather shirt/jacket) Expensive ski jackets, for nothing. Gap jeans for 25 cents, I don't usually look for gold/silver jewelry, but found a 14 caret braclet, I'm still wearing it.

I think the chatting, enjoying being out and moving, and going to charity sales or moving sales the most fun.  Also, books!! Oh where can you get such enjoyment for 25 cents. I'm an artist and i've found grumbacker oils and watercolors for a tube (the tag says , new ) brushes, and expensive paper .

In Carson City, nevada, I'd go to 25 of them a weekend, there would be 50 listed! (We furnished a rental condo---for nothing). You couldn't hit them all. so much fun, sarah

genesis? How does your sister have yard sales so many times a year? Does she just get items from everyone or horde all of her stuff thru the winter time or both ?

I know in a paper we got, it is like a classified ads paper, and people ask for free items to pick up for yard sales.

The yard sale I done, for those 2 days were our stuff, and MIL stuff, and some stuff that was left over from previous yard sales, that my SIL done.

Hi Joonie, You're right, mostly  the family gave her things they didn't want, and people who had  things they didn't want, stopped by and she would buy their load for a small fee and resale. Location is EVERYTHING and she was on the main highway thru town and maybe a mile from the local landfill. She advertised in the local papers want ads too. It really helped her when she had to go on disability at a fairly young age. She had an outbuilding for all her stuff that helped a lot  too. Poor thing is in a nursing home this past year and a half and is only 60yrs old. All kinds of medical probs. for years though. Mainly brain aneuryisms.......Genesis

Sorry to hear about your sister

sister in law....ThanksHillhoney- I love antiques roadshow...wonder how much i'll get for dear ole hubby

Tag sales are  estate sales.. like when  aunty dies, and her house needs to be emptied out..  Someone who specializes in these comes, sets the prices and  tags everything. they are paid a percentage of the sales.

We call shopping at yard/garage sales "going sailing.""LOL

I enjoy sailing, but seldom do it and have only had a couple of sales myself.

Oh and I am an Antiques Roadshow fan too. My all time favorite episode was when the woman found a conquistodors helmet in her attic and said "well I cleaned it up with a little Pledge and Windex"  I about peed my pants   hearing that.

Kathy you're right that kind of thing is hysterical.  That's what my mom would do, LOL.  No actually she did something even worse.  During the late 60's early 70's she bought "antiquing kits" that had a flat brown base, and then a dark brown varnish in it that she put on with a rag and tried to make a "wood grain" with it.  She "antiqued" every old piece in our house with that crap.  And then to protect her work she put on , several coats of this clear shiney stuff that was a precursor to polyurethane.  So every nice old piece she has looks like fake wood wrapped in saran wrap!  I'm talking about antique clocks, picture frames, a Duncan Phyfe table, EVERYTHING!

Gotta love her, that's my Momma!

I actually started sorting out stuff to put in a friends neighborhood garage sale. But I ended up feeling really bad that weekend and stayed home. So..I am going to do a garage sale on my own in a few weeks when we get past all of the rainey weather. There are loads of online websites that give the "cardinal rules" of yard sales. The hard core yard sale shoppers have criteria that draw them to certain sales over others. I would like to make a little bit of cash if I can, but the stuff that I cant sell wont make it back in my house. I want to get rid of stuff and try to simplify my life. I tend to be a pack-rat and spend alot of time trying to find places to put stuff that I end up never using. I sure do hate to have to move all of the extra stuff to the new house, but right now I live out in the boonies and wouldnt have any customers if I had the yard sale here.

Craigslist.com is also a good way to get rid of the "leftovers".  Post an ad saying free stuff on the curb with your address, and it will disappear!

I didn't mean anything bad about the Road show guys. Just brought up memories of my Grandmother who loved the show. That's all

I watch that "Cash in the Attic" show on HGTV sometimes too. I'd like for them to come comb through my two garages and see what kind of money makers we have. I don't think there's anything of valuse in there.....but you never know.
