Sorry for the copy and paste.  But I am on 4 different boards and it is a lot to type out 4 times lol.  I also want to thank everyone for the support and care you have shown to us while we waited and waited forever it seemed like for this appt.

The appt. went very well except for the blood draw.  Oy vey.  And I talked and talked with her about it, hydrated her the night before and today, and we still had issues.  Whew.  It came down to where she had to go potty and I wouldn't let her go til she gave us some blood first lol.  It was over after I said that in 2 minutes lol.

She has to go for some xrays of her hands and wrists.  He could feel the fluid in both her wrists.  Her wrists and hands were extremely tender also.  We are going to do a pred pack starting this weekend so she is not so wired out in school for the rest of the week.  Thankfully, it is a long weekend and they are out of school early on Friday.  So I will start her pred when she gets home at 1130.  She is also on Celebrex.  He gave us a whole bunch of samples of it too.  He is basically waiting for lab work to be back before we take any further steps with medication.  He said the most important thing right now is to calm her inflammation.  I am hoping the pred and celebrex combo do that.  He did say that we are very lucky that we caught everything early.  Gives us such an advantage with treatment.

He is also testing her for parvovirus.  I haven't done any research on that yet.  He said he just wants to rule it out so we know in what direction treatment needs to go.  He said that the virus attacks young people her age and can take forever to go away.  It has the same type of symptoms as the JRA.  But he still thinks it is the JRA especially with my history.

So that is that and we play the waiting game as usual.  I am going to have to find something for us to do over the long weekend to direct some of the extra energy she will have being on the pred.

Sounds like everything is under control. I am so happy for you having such a good Doc.
I never thought about a child on pred before but thats gotta be extra special so, have fun  gramma!!
Sounds like the appt went well.  Hopefuly the pred and celebrex combo work out!   How is she feeling?   Give her a big hug.  Shes got a good mom there takin care of her (and dad too

When I first started with symptoms of RA - runs strong in my family too - I was testing positive for Parovirus which is a mono type thing (i think) and apparently when first dx'd it can come back positve even if not really there? Your blood can play tricks at the beginning I was told. I was happy thinking just a virus but when they took blood a second time to confirm whether it really was the virus and that was gone and good old RA was confirmed. My Rheumie said that it is common in younger people predisposed to RA pick up the parovirus which activates the RA in their body.....

Hope this helps

Sounds like a good start on things Gram. Good Luck to Daneille as she begins her predisone. I hope it makes her feel worlds better quickly.

Seee there... needles are NOT our friends

Anyways... glad it went well. Hope the celebrex helps her out, I know it did for me. Oh... the first NSAID I was put on when I was 14 was Lodine XL. I did not get celebrex until I was 20.

Hope she improves fast.

Hi  Gramma, I hope all goes well for your little girl. I've seen the effects this disease and the meds can do to an adult and its awful,But for you that have children or was Dx'ed with it as a child my heart really goes out to you. Good luck and God bless...GenesisYay!! It sounds like everything is moving in the right direction. When you research the parvovirus also look into Fifths disease. (it is a form of parvovirus)  My daughter had that, it says it goes away in about 10 days, but my daughter had it for 2 months. My daughter also had what the diagnosed as Erythema nodosum (sp.?) in college, this hung around for about 6 months and was very scary. Hope everythings goes well!!!!

I hope Danielle feels better very quickly. It is so good that you are on top of this and treating it so fast. Good luck with that prednisone this weekend. I know what it does to me! People can actually guess how much I'm on at a given time!

I hope Danielle is doing well with this and can get herself focused on her usual activities and life soon, with this being a smaller part of the whole picture.

http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/40024615/  the slapped cheek syndrome is quite common in school children here, nicole my youngest had it at nursery, but no arthropathy at all. I hope she will be better soon.My 18 year olds still screams at blood testsA friend of mine had parvovirus. I thought only dogs got that until she
exlplained the whole thing to me. I'm so glad you have a good doctor and
one that you can trust. I'm so sorry about the blood draw. Kids at any age
have such a hard time with anything invasive. Hopefully you will get to
know a really good phlebotomist that you both know and trust over time
and after a while, she will become more ok with it. It is one of those things
we all must overcome at some point. But it is too bad she has to ever
endure this terrible disease. I'm sorry she has to be on pred(i won't go into
one of my rants, lol) but short term hopefully you can get the swelling down
and she will feel better very soon. Keep me posted.
Poor old Danielle - blood tests can be very scarey for a youngster. Let's hope she gets some relief from the Pred. It's good that you're having a long weekend ahead.  Hugs for you all. Gramma it sure sounds like Danielle has a good Dr. and that is half the battle.  I hope her blood work is negative and and in the meantime the meds should take care of her inflammation.  Tell her that she is in our thoughts and prayers.Yeah, and just to put it out there (we all know this anyway, but ya know) --- You know how some diseases and illnesses they say "only kids can get" for example, fifths disease(slap face) Yeah, well, they're wrong. It's just RARE. I speak from experience here. LoL It went around the daycare like wild fire, and I came in looking like I'd had the crap beat out of me one day. We brushed it off, until I started feeling terrible. It lasted about 2 weeks, and even my doctor was amazed that I got it. But ya know, compromised immune system, so it shouldn't be surprising. So, if she DOES end up having something like that, BE CAREFUL! Cause, yes, you CAN get it. Loves ya lady. And the little one ;-) Glad he is looking at ALL options.  Hope the pred pack works for her over the weekend.  If she starts meds you'll have to think of some super reward for her when she has to have regular bloods done.  I'll send you a pack of incentives. lol Thank you everyone!!  I was wondering why he was testing for parvovirus as my experience also was just with dogs having parvo and it is pretty nasty yech.  Thanks for all the info on this.  I know what direction to head on this and what to tell Danny when he gets home from work tonight.  She is getting a pred pack just like we get.  Friday is that first big initial dose that I will give her when she gets home from school.  It is a half day so I am hoping she will be able to sleep Friday night.  If not, I will try a tylenol pm.  If that doesn't work, I will page the doc Saturday.  Bleargh.

Yes, pred.  Yay.  Whooopeee.  This is gonna be a laugh a minute.  NOT!  I will be in charge of her Friday as Danny is at work.  He gets her Saturday as that is my down day.  He is actually off this weekend!!  Sunday I think we are going to go to the chocolate fest (yes chocolate fest do ya hate me now muuuwahahaha!!!).  Monday I think we will hit the beach as it is not going to be hot out and not too many people will be there like last year.  I wonder how many grey hairs I will grow out of this experience.

Grammie!

Thank you for the update on Danielle.  She was such a big girl for her appt today, she deserves a little something special

It sounds like your rheumy is looking at all the options and starting her on Pred to calm those nasty inflammations.  I hope it doesn't make her as grumpy as it does me

Phats

One word of warning for everyone - Fifth's disease or "slap face" can be very dangerous for pregnant women to be exposed to, as it can harm the unborn baby.  That was always an issue at the elementary school where I worked when the disease would pop up again, special measures would be taken to protect any pregnant teachers.

Glad to hear about the successful appointment!  Give Danielle a big hug for me!

OMG YES. Thank you Karen! A *lot* of childhood illnesses can be harmful for a preggo girlie. It sucks, you have to be really careful. It's always better to be safe than sorry, too.
