HAving a Luau | Arthritis Information

I don't even know if it is spelled correctly! I am having a party with a tropical theme for my mom's post knee replacement surgery ( to boost her spirits) and for my neighbor who babysits and has been a godsend to me these past 2 years. The toddlers have brighten my most darkest days and she has lended a very wide shoulder and a lot of good ol' fashioned common sense when I have had the "blues".

SO I have all this Luau stuff and my daughter will be moving into her apartment about the same time my mom hopefully has her knee replacement surgery ( please God, let her potassium level be normal for this next surgery).

Anyway, I am planning a huge cookout with all the trimmings with a pool, sprinkler and fun, games and prizes for the preschoolers. Included will be a  layout of food, juice and adult beveages for parents after 6:00!

My neighbor ( the babysitter for all these smiles of sunshine in my life) says I am absolutely nutz for doing it! I agree but it will be so much fun. We would fly my sisters' grandson in for the event but he has a commercial to do. ( darned those working California kids!...so sad, we can never see him or fly him in anymore cause he is """BUSY""""). (Sounds wonderful but for grandma's and great aunts it is a total bummer because we NEVER get to see him!)

Regardless, I will most likely be in pain but I have to tell you, this friend of mine which is to be classified more as a sister, has been my calm in this stormy past few years. She deserves the recognition. Plus the kids are surely to bring my mom some much needed joy after her knee replacement, and they are so darned ADORABLE and will have a wonderful time I am sure.

So if ya wanna join in some good old fashioned eats and fun, we will be having a really good party with kids and food in mid June. You are all invited. I may even send invitation to all my mom's surgeons.

Sounds GREAT! Let me know if you need any recipes! Have a great time -take pics!i did one for my dad's 60th b-day. I have tons of great ideas if you would like them. Everyone raved at my creativity.

You probably already know about this one, but I'll pass it along anyway:

It's fantastic for party supplies and decorations!

Have fun - sounds like a great reason to party.  Now will we be seeing pictures of you in a grass skirt and coconuts?

Hillhoney, that's where I got a lot of my stuff, it's a great company for parties!!! I'm planning a grad party for my son and I had forgotten how much i liked their stuff - and reasonably priced too!

I'm swimming the Atlantic now, I may make the party if the sharks dont eat me

There will undoubtedly be balloons, trinkets and a hamper filled with surprises. I called the sitter and she said all will be fine with the parents that it will be a "day trip" and it is just across the street but t she may still has to have all the parents' permission.

Her two children are my "adopted grandkids" and they love coming over here,I always have cookies in the cookie jar and healthy snacks for them.

Hurts, thankyou for the compliment. It was really heartfelt. SOmetimes it helps to redirect your thinking so the pain is not so bad, maybe that is why I do all this. My mother has gone in for surgery and her potassium level has been too high and all the while her knee is getting worse and placing more burden on her other knee. She gets depressed and I have no solution. ( ANd it aint easy living with her in these moods!

I am trying to come up with some type of a t-shirt for Kelly ( the neighbor) I think I am gonna get some permanent markers and have the kids write their names on it. Even though one of the little ones hasn't quite mastered her name  yet, I thought it would be a great way to show of what the kids have learned through Kelly.

I am sure this will be fun and the kids will be a hyper/excited/giggly group for sure.

For a t-shirt, you can use fabric paints to put all the children's hand prints all over it. It would be cute in bright luau type colors. For individual goodie bags, you can get very small pails/shovels from the dollar store to put the treats in. You can get a cheap blow-up boat there too and fill it with ice and the juice boxes. I used large seashells as candy dishes on the tables. a great party game is the limbo. a CD with carribean music would be fun too,I think you can get one with childrens songs on it. It sounds like fun, I want to come! LOL

Great ideas! I had thought about a CD with kid music on it with a tropical theme as well, I may have one I will have to check. I have several huge seashells, great idea for the candies and nuts!

I was also thinking about getting each fruit ( such as pineapple and mango ect.) and placing one uncut fruit back behind cut up pieces of the fruit on a table ( bits of fruit in bowls of course)so the little ones could learn where the fruit chunks come from and be able to identify them. THen we can play a color game of fruit or something and have them identify each type of fruit and then taste all the different ones.

Other than that I have to make the flower leis ( fake flowers of course unless I can find some leis really inexpensive somewhere). Eww and maybe print out a map of hawaii!

It will be fun!

Jode, my daughter had a Hawaii party many years ago.  We let the kids make their own leis - it was an easy activity.  If you buy some inexpensive brightly colored silk flowers from the dollar store and take them apart, and give the kids some tube shaped macaroni and some yarn, they can string a flower, then a macaroni spacer on yarn and repeat it over and over to make a lei.  Just be sure to buy flowers that have a center hole surrounded by several petals.

We also made grass skirts with yellow and green crepe paper streamers tied onto a piece of yarn used as a waistband.

I love the fruit idea.  Sneak in a little learning without them knowing it!
