HI

I have been taken this med. for sleep.  It works okay, but when i try to not use it for a couple of nights i get the shakes.  What are some other med. that you guys take to help with sleep.

Thanks

trazodone should be taken daily, without skipping a dose.

It is  actually an antidepressant, and starting and stopping isnt a good  idea.

I've been on it for years, for  BiPolar disorder ( I had BP long before it was "cool and trendy" lol)  if I forget a night, I am real aware of it.

Ambien or Ambien CR and Lunesta are a couple of other prescribed sleep aids.

Thanks for the info on the trazadone.

Benedryl is dirt cheap in the 'house brands' and it does work for many. When used on a regular basis it can help with allergies, even at a dose of 1 pill at bedtime (you can take 2 of most otc brands).

I'm a little groggy on it for the 1st week but this is what I use to get through the spring bloom in the desert.

My RD said he would rather I take sleep meds than take benedryl or Tylenol pm (which has the same ingredient as benedryl minus the tylenol).  So he prescribed me Ambien CR.  He did not mention why he did not want me taking the benedryl.  Think I will ask him why next time.  I took it for years for sleep before RA.

My pain specialist rx'd Restoril for me. It works pretty well, unless I'm stressed about something, then nothing makes me sleep.

I've tried Lunesta, Seroquel (also an anti-depressant), Ambien, which worked quite well many years ago.

I have had sleep problems for more than 20 years. Sometimes I won't sleep for a couple of days, til my body just gives up and takes my mind with it.

I am very allergic to Trazadone. My back had a rash so bad it felt and looked like alligator skin!

Maybe those of us who don't sleep could sign on and think of a game to play or something. My meds at night make me a little goofy, but sleep still evades me. But maybe the goofyness could prove to be amusingThey are handing Trazadone out like candy to all our soldiers coming home
from Iraq. Like icing on a moldy cake. What a horrible way to treat PTSD

I take trazodone and ambien, ok thats two of the meds I take, there is more.....lol

Maybe you can not take benedryl because it would cause an interaction with another med you are on?  I take Restoril also. I've been on it for about 4 years and it's losing its effect. I have to take a tylenol pm with it now for it to work. I have too many thoughts going through my head to sleep on my own. I don't think that was the case Gramma, because he has had me take it for reactions I have had to other meds.  It was because he didn't want me to take it to sleep.  Now I am really wondering why.  Hope I remember to ask him next time...........uh, better write that down. I can not for the life of me figure out why he wouldn't want you to take it to sleep then.  Weird.  Please post the answer to this question when you find out!!  I am curious to know.  I take the Trazadone and Ambien for the Fibro have been on them for a very long time and do not like when RD wants to try the new meds, no way, what i am on is working lets not fix what is not broken..... about benadryl...according to my Mom's neuro it has been linked to cognitive probs after long term use. And especially so as we get older. In fact he explained that he had several patients who were thought to have mild/moderate alzheimer's and once they d/c'd the benadryl at night the condition cleared up in very short order.

So that is likely why doc's are not so keen on using benadryl, to help people sleep, anymore.

BTW, I have been using GABA to help when I am either kinda having a hard time shutting off my thoughts at night. It has worked GREAT. I also noticed anecdotally that the GABA can help me mange the pain better during the day. One of the functions of GABA is part of the process for inhibiting nerve conduction (prolly via blocking re-polarization I would think).

I use a sub-lingual variety...and it has turned out to be one of the most effective herbal remedy's I have ever used. No side effects or hang-over either...at least for me.
