Stomach Pain and Nausea | Arthritis Information

Have any of you ever gotten an ulcer or gastritis from your anti-inflammatory while you were taking a PPI?  I’ve been having stomach pain and nausea for a couple of months.  The pain is just ever-so-slightly right of center.  At first I thought it was the gallbladder, but I had an ultrasound and it was normal.  Recently I noticed it was worse after I took my Relafen so I stopped it for about a week and my stomach seems to be a little better.  I thought my Prevacid would keep me from having problems from the Relafen.

This is pretty common. You should really see your doctor and get it looked
at. The prevacid may not be enough or y ou may need a break from the
relafen. I was thinking that relafen had a lower incidence of GI upset than
some of the others.I have had an ongoing problem. I take 80 mg. Protonix a day & 2 OTC Pepcids - with my doctor's approval. Get it checked out to be sure it isn't serious (although heartburn is very serious when it's happening to you). One pill is often not enough. Also, you sometimes have to change them to get the same reaction.

I've been on Relafen and Protonix for a long time, and I definitely have nausea (of course I take 12 prescriptions), but it's bearable (compared to the alternative).

I haven't really had abdominal pain until a couple of days ago...it's really high up (a band of pain just below my bra) and it's driving me crazy.  Thought it was gas pains, but that doesn't seem to be it.  My gallbladder's already gone, so that's not it either, although it feels like the same pain, only higher.

Kweenie, I guess we both need to get to the dr.

Innerglow, if you've been on Relafen a long time and without stomach protection, this could very well be what's causing the nausea and pain. From your description of where your pain is located, it sounds like it might be a strong case of heartburn. I have acid reflux and am taking  Pantoloc to control it. When I have an attack... it's in the same place. I usually take 1pill /day, but on Relafen the heartburn/acid reflux attack increased so I had to double the dose of Pantaloc.  Since stopping Relafen, I'm back to 1 pill a day.

Oh I forgot... before I started the Relafen, my rheumie was going to prescribe something to protect my stomach and when I told her I was taking Pantaloc for acid reflux, she said that's perfect you're well looked after.

I sure hope you can find some relief soon... those attacks can be extremely painful. I've had a few nasty attacks and each time the pain was almost unbearable.

Good luck

HI Kweenb, I have this problem very regularly and have had lots of tests to try and sort it out.  Mainly gastro-oesophageal reflux from too many antiinflammatories and pred combined.  My GP keeps a close watch on me incase of ulcers.  I know I had helicobactor-pylori??? spelling?  recently and had to have antibiotics and this is started from formation of ulcers I think she said.  So now I still take antiinflammatories but have switched to a newer brand, Prexige, not as good for pain tho as Feldene.  I am on Zoton to help protect stomach and Dr recommended Mylanta also, and eat before tabs.   Hope this helps, Janie.

Jane,

You mentioned "anti-inflammatories and prednisone".  I have been having a lot of trouble lately and have been on prednisone 3 different times in the last 4 months.  Is taking the two together worse on your stomach?  I also double my dose of Relafen when flaring - though it is still in acceptable limits of 2,000 mg/day.

Hi again Kweenb, my GP is always warning me about ulcers and says that pred and antinflammatories combined are very dangerous for causing ulcers /gastrointestinal bleeding, so she keeps a very close watch on me.  She even had me taking a double dose of Zoton at one stage.  Hope this helps, Janie.

Punkie, isn't the Protonix protecting my stomach?  I've been taking that almost as long, and without any real problems.

Fortunately the band of pain is gone now, so perhaps it was heartburn or gas.

Innerglow, I'm so glad to hear the pain's gone. It's still  a good idea to follow through with getting your doctor to check you out.

You may need to have the dosage adjusted. My doctor felt it was the Relafen and prednisone causing the increase in attacks, so he increased my daily dose.
