OT: Scuba Divers?? | Arthritis Information

I would like to hear from anyone who has RA and scuba dives. My husband is a diver and is encouraging me to take a class and get certified too. I think it would be really fun but I dont know if I can do it or not. I just wondered if there was anyone out there who has tried it. I would have tried it this winter on our cruise, but I have asthma and they wouldn't let me.  I had fun snorkling and swimming in the 78 degree salt water though! Scuba diving is brilliant. My hubby bought me scuba diving lessons for a birthday when we still lived in S.Africa and I had the most life changing experience. I did an open water 1 course and open water 2.We dived coral reefs in Sodwana Bay and went shark hunting just off the coast of Durban. My diving buddy was a well known scuba diving author and he took me looking for turtles, it was such a great day for me.I recommend it to anyone. The equipment as in your tank and weight belt might be a bit heavy out of the water but once you are in the water it becomes weightless. I havent dived since being back in the UK but one day I will try again

Crunchy,  I was diagnosed last year with RA and went diving several months later.  Didn't have any issues.  I have trouble carrying a heavy tank (but that's not an RA issue).  It is very relaxing for me.

YAY!! I am so glad to hear such positive responses!! I am going to do the "try it" class where they lend you the epuipment and for 30 bucks you get to do a mini one day class to see if you might like it. My husband has volunteered to let me use his gear and get in the pool..lol..I think it would be cool. My daughter is 10 and wants to get certified too. She is just old enough now. She did a buddy dive with my husband last year and went down to 25 feet. She was as cool as a cucumber, but then kids dont freak themselves out thinking of all the bad things that could happen like us adults do. I dont know if my son would be able to do it though because he is asthmatic, although he only has episodes about once every 2 years when he is already sick with other gunk.  He can run and everything with no problems. It would be cool to take both kids and all of us go to Cozumel or some other tropical place and go dive together.

I think I will leave the SHARK hunting to yall....I am interested in the kind of fish that dont eat people!! Maybe a big sea turtle would be cool, or some coral...pretty harmless, right??

I totally responded to you on the other forum Crunchy, and everyone here said what I said anyway - I just wanted to add that I must be really stupid, because I can't even snorkel. I forget to breathe out my mouth, and not my nose.......Hahaha so I've always wanted to scuba, because you have a plug for your nose, so I COULDN'T screw it up..................take me with you? *grin* I think anything in the water is great for us !!!!  I was always leary about scuba as I am clostraphobic but I overcame it going spelunking, cave exploring.  I think scuba diving would probably be a blast.  I love snorkeling and anything in the water makes me feel better

Crunchy, I'd love to try Scuba diving but probably won't get to do it in this life.  Go for it.  Lindy
