Hi everyone, I need some help/advice on what to take for osteoporosis. I have a chronic esophagus and get severe heartburn with the usual drugs Actonal, Fosamax and one more I tried but can't remember tonight! I asked my GP about Boniva and he did not know much about it. He suggested other drugs but wanted me to see what others on this forum are taking, who can not tolerate the usual drugs too. Mike is a great GP and very interested in using all resources. We spoke about methotrexate and he only has RA patients on this. I am doing okay on 7.5mg Pred. Its been 5 weeks since 10mg which I was taking for 16 months. I phone Rheumy next week so hope I will drop again. Maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel!! Hope this is how you are feeling too xx  LynCareful Lyn re fosamax, things in paper regarding bad effects from this drug in Canada.............look into "dead jaw disease"

Good luck with your meds         &n bsp;   regards         rose

My rheumy prescribed Fosamax to me.  My sister said she had heard something about there being law suits.  I didn't start taking it.  Too scary.  I figured with my luck, I'd be one that it affected.  I am taking lots of calcuim.  My bone test showed that everything was o.k., so I hope I an keep it that way.

I found this site:  http://www.lawyersandsettlements.com/case/fosamax.html

It is called osteocrenosis of the jaw. Google it ...it'll scare the cr*p out of you! It did so to me enough to stop taking fosamax or actonel or any of those bisphosphonates I think they call it. I'd rather break all my bones than get that!l marianne195239236.7790625The new yearly treatment does apparently not cause ONJ marianne195239236.7792361111What is the new yearly treatment? Lyn

I take prometrium a progesterine hormone(not the dangerous estrogen) and my doc says it may help my bones

Thank you Marianne,Looks very interesting. I will take to my GP. Do you have any side effects from this? Any other suggestions from anyone? LynMy Doctor just phoned again going over this issue as I am having jaw problems, especially in the morning and feel like I have to unhinge it to eat.

She said just about all can do this to your jaw and I was taking Boniva infusions every three months. Side affects there can be the jaw and muscle problems.

We decided since my Osteopenia is improved some and the porosis has not taken over, and I showed a bit of improvement when on Evista, that we will leave it there. That way we can see if there is improvement in symptoms from dc'ing Boniva. Actually I missed the last three month infusion and was due for it again. Not going to get it after all.

Don't take anything you don't have to. I take two Ultra Tums 1000 daily, broken up to am and pm to keep the calcium in the body. It's the easiest way for me.

Also 800 mg. of Vit. D is recommended. Best we can do other than eating the right greens ect. Alot can't do dairy and some think it not as good as greens.

So that is my experience so far.
