I'm not sure if this is something anyone has experienced so I am asking. I have RA in the jaw joints and experiencing excruciating pain in the cartoid artery along with it.

I have been using lidocaine cream to alleviate some of the pain, heat, massage and ibuprofin.

Has anyone else experienced this?
Thanks,

IrishEyes

Hi Irish Eyes,

Welcome! I've never had or heard of this Carotid artery problem you describe......sounds terrible. What does your RD say about it?

It's kind of quiet here at this time.  I'm sure you'll get some replies tomorrow though.

This is a great group

Glad you're here!!

Just wanted to welcome you Irish Eyes. Glad you're here.

I also occasionally get RA flares in my jaw, so far always on the right side.  At first I thought I had an ear or mastoid problem but my rheumy said no it is RA.  The flares last me about 3 days, during which time I can't open my teeth so am reduced to liquid diet.  I just take pain pills until it relents (good thing I have an overbite so I can squeeze the pill in

Thanks for sharing with me. It's nice to know we're not alone, though I hate knowing you hurt as much as I do.

Your moniker (Irish Eyes) makes me think you are smiling through your pain.  None of us can really feel the other's pain but when we suffer ourselves we get a pretty darn good idea what others are feeling - unless some people who don't know RA tell me that I just have to get busy and exercise those sore joints and things will be better.  All I know is that the closest thing to severe flare pain is natural childbirth and that at least comes in waves.  RA flares are painful, constant and make the best of us a little (ok sometimes a lot!) on the crabby side.  I am lucky in that my flares seem to be on a 3-5 day limitation, thank God, so I usually know if I can hang in there relief will arrive.  The funny thing about my flares is that they disappear as far as they appear.

I don't know about myofascial pain.  I'll have to look it up.

Tonight I have both wrists in braces and six of 10 fingers with pretty severe joint pain.  Makes typing interesting.  Hang in there and whatever you do don't grit your teeth!!!!!

That was actually funny about the gritting of the teeth... I don't normally grit, but I do have a habit of clenching. And right now I have the AC low so am fighting doing so. Just got up and wrapped up, fighting it. Hubby's still sleeping.

You're lucky in that your flares last three to five days. I can never tell when mine will be over. They can last weeks to months. This one started two weeks ago and has moved from hips/knees to my jaw and I was feeling it in my fingers last night. I have to be careful not to overwork certain joints, as I'm sure you know.

Mine too will disappear as fast as they appear. This is quite the mysterious disease. And oh yes, don't you love the ones who tell you how to treat your RA with exercise or all the weird concocctions. I have to admit, my mother recently told me about gin and white raisins for pain and I've gone and tried it! It's supposed to take up to five weeks to start seeing results and I've only been on it three days. I figured, not being on pain meds now, I need to try something outlandish. Can't hurt!

I have a root canal come Thursday. I'm a wee bit nervous about having my mouth open for so long with this going on. I hope it doesn't take but a minute.

Take care and thanks again sewez.

IrishEyes (smilin' through the pain...like you!)
