My first w/Prednisone | Arthritis Information

High all. Will Prednisone really make me wanna eat? Is it a good drug to put into my system? I'm working so hard to get weight off! The doc did tell me if I didn't notice any change in a week to stop, so that's good. Relafen has seemed to run it's course with me as far as anti-inflamitoryissness and pain mgnmt is gonna go. She told me MTX was next. But I like my wine! Oh, I'm gonna whine now. K, that's all. Prednisone input would be very helpful. Thanx team!

The MTX... I know of people that still have a occasional glass of wine here and there with no problems.   You just can't do it every day as the two together will wear on your liver more and quickly.   So... have one every now and again and watch your liver testing.

Hope this helps a bit... Hang in there.

Monk.  If you are on a low dose of pred. (5 mg or less) I doubt you'll gain.  I was on 5 mg for a year and didn't gain .  I just weaned myself off it.  I've been on mtx for a year too and drink wine at times.  So far so good.

Monk; I was given predisone after my first RD visit as well. It made a world of difference very quickly. I've taken it in short coarses over the years as well when I have a bad flare, but for me I take it a short while and slowly cut back until I'm off of it.

I've never been on it for long like some here. I had slight weight gain, but most of the time when I've been on it I've been in pretty bad shape and have lost a good bit of weight due to the flair so my doctor encourages the weight gain. I tend to lose weight when I'm flairing....so that aspect never bothered me. It does cause moodyness for me which is the worst side effect as far as I'm concerned.

All in all it's been a wonder drug for me. Hope it will be for you as well.

Good luck!!

As everyone else has stated, you won't gain weight if you are on the Prednisone short term, anything longer and maybe. I have been on and off Preds since Feb and they are fantastic for pain relief and work incredibly quickly. I recall taking 15mg one night and being pain-free by the next morning. Clever stuff! If your dosage is short-term whilst you find a medication suitable for you then go for it. Particularly if your going to give MTX a try you might want to stay on the Preds for 7 weeks or so and then gradually wean off them as the MTX starts to kick in. Of course this is all up to your doctor. Although I feel like I could specialise in this disease by now. As for giving the MTX a go I give it a big thumbs up. Of course its what suits you and your body but for me its a lifesaver. Good luck!

I'm crazy about MTX myself...forgot to mention it.

I'm a huge fan!!

Thanx everyone. I didn't understand about the carbs and sugars with the pred., very interesting. I'm on a 7 week course, so hopefully I won't see ANY weight gain. My GYN told me I qualify for a breast reduction if I lose 20 lbs. So you see my quandry here. I'm already in the right place for taking the prednisone then I guess. I've been eating right and swimming all the time. And there isthe motivation for perky new breasts. The support here is wonderful, thanks everyone, really.

I want perky new breast too!!

I wear a 34DDD and that's what the majority of my back and shoulder pain is from I'm sure. People swear they want them...but they have no idea how much pain they cause.

Good Luck with that Monk.

Monk--

The pred will make you hungry--it doesn't normally make you gain weight automatically without eating, too.  So you just have to be very very aware of everything you put in your mouth when you're taking it.  I understand how important the weight loss will be to you--after having lost more than 100 pounds, I sure didn't want to gain it back.  It's been a struggle because I stay hungry, but I've pretty much fought the urge to binge.  Try to eat as little junk as you can, and fill your self with the good [boring] stuff.  Too many carbs [the good stuff] have never been good for you.  When I couldn't stand not eating those cookies, I chose fat over pain--plain and simple.  I guess in the 8 months I've been taking and trying to wean from pred, I guess I've gained no more than 10 pounds--most of that from being greedy rather than from taking prednisone.

Monk, I was on five mg for three years and didn't notice an increase in my appetite. I had to increase it to ten for a few months and even then I did not. I'm down to six again and hopefully will be able to get off in the next few months. It's such a catch 22 with prednisone. It is great for helping with inflammation in flares but long term can be so scary.

Hey Lovie, I think we should sell DDD over the internet, my back cant take it n e more

Monk I have taken predinsone on and off for years now. Because it is a steroid it has many side effects including weight gain. But like most others here I was on a short term course, and was usually weaned in less than two wks. I personally never experienced weight gain, but it did effect my mnd, I was loopy for the first few days until I tappered down some. Hopefully you will be like most of us and aviod the weight gain (mood swings I cant promise

When I was on  15 mg of pred yes, I got absolutely ravenous, and yes I ate. I gained about 25 pounds in a very short time. BUT now that I am off the pred, I have lost nearly all the weight.

I weighed myself today and have gone down 20 pounds in about 3 months. I'm happy.  But on the other hand if I NEED pred, I will take it again. .But..yet another hand... (is this 3 or 4 hands now?) pred causes me nasty cardiac issues, and since I have heart failure I have to really watch that..but as it stands.. I'm not on pred now, but considering the relief it gives I will take it again if I have to..

Monk-I have been taking
Prednisone for about 5 months now. (between 5-15
mgs.) The pain relief experienced was miracilous
(sp). At first I did gain some weight, but realized I
was feeling hungrier and why, and also started
eating differently More protien-less carbs), and am
starting to loose again. (which is good, as I was
overweight to begin with.)

But I definately recommend it over being in pain. I
am also taking MTX; have been for about 2 1/2
months. I was a little sick to my stomach at first, but
that went away after a couple of weeks. I have just
started to notice that it is really helping (and I love a
glass of wine once in a while too)

Hope all goes well for you!!

Well, second day on the prednisone and no major hunger pangs, yet. But looking for an eye shadow that will look great on the third eye in the middle of my forehead!

Hey Monk.  I have been on and off prednisone for about a year now.  Up to 25 mg. down to 5 mg.  I am on 10 mg. now.  I do notice that I get short tempered and CRAVE sugar.  I am not one of the strong folks here - I eat the candy but because I feel so much better on prednisone, I exercise more.  Prednisone scares me because I only want to use it for flares and not  be on it consistently.  It is the long term use that I have read really does have permanent, nasty, side effects.  My weight goes up and down 5 - 8 pounds, depending on pred. use.  I hope this helps.

Well, side effects aren't increase in hunger for me! I looked @ the bottle to make sure it didn't say Prednizoom. Fine by me. Day four and my kitchen is painted and the cabinets too. Finishing up the guest room this evening. Inflamation is 20% reduced already. And the parts of my body that normally shut down after a long day of work, like my lower back and hands, feel tired but not in total pain. Happy, happy, joy, joy! Just had to share.

Peace.

This is my first post, sorry so long....

Hi, I was on prednisone back in January 15 mg. and I felt insane, headachy, very very moody, I didn't gain weight that time, but had a bloaty face.  I felt like I wanted to scream non-stop or cry.

I had carpal tunnel surgery in 2003 on both hands, and ended up with what was diagnosed as RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy) by a Neurologist, another Neurologist said no, the Rheumo said I have a Connective Tissue Disease, and I have Raynauds for sure, and the Carpal Tunnel seems to be there slightly again, with some slowing of the nerves in my EMG.

The two Rheumos that handle my case said I may possibly have RA, Scleroderma, Lupus.  My MS test was negative, but they want to do it again.  I don't fit neatly into any category and he is very perplexed.

I was bedriiden for almost a year in chronic pain, and started to feel a little more normal this past spring through summer.  I cannot take any anti-depressants and most medicine because I have Narrow Angle Glaucoma (I am only 42.)  Last time I was on prednisone I was being weaned from Paxil because of the Glaucoma.

For the past 7 months, I had been going to bed at 11 and staying up until 3 or 4 in the morning laying in bed wide awake and finally falling asleep to wake at 7 or 8 am.

I recently (in the past month) lost almost 30 pounds and have been eating 3 times a day, slimfast for breakfast, cottage cheese or yogurt for lunch and a fish/fowel with salad for dinner.  I have more weight to lose and I am terrified of gaining weight.  I finally started having lots more energy and been keeping very active, which has helped, I've even started going to bed at 10 and falling asleep within 15 minutes and sleeping until almost 6:00 am.

I am just so frustrated because I finally feel like I have regained part of my life back, and then I find out my insides are not getting better, but worse???

I just found out I need to start back on them, my inflammation numbers and white blood cell count is very high.  I have been on plaquenil for about 3 months with no help.

I just started the 10 mg Prednisone today, September 29th at 6:00 am central and I will check back and let you all know, how this is affecting me.  Since I have been on a diet about a month, and losing steadily, and having more energy and sleeping, I will try to keep you all posted on my weight gain/loss, my hyperness, my anxiety (I suffer anxiety attacks), my mood and my appetite.  Hopefully I won't kick, hit, break or scream at anything or anyone.

I believe I have to be on this for sure 6 weeks, unless I have problems, then I am to call the doctor.  He knows the problems I had last time.

Since I realize weight gain is from appetite, I will try to work harder to combat that.  I just hope I can sleep at night and will check back with you all.

Thanks for listening to me.

Ah Fluffy,

Sorry for your troubles.

Pred is tough on me. Makes me too emotional. Interfers with sleep. I get fat quick because my appetite swings into top gear and self-control flies out the window. But absolutely nothing works on inflammation like pred for me. It's a super fixer!

I wish they would make something that works like pred without its terrible long term side affects.

- When I weaned off Paxil I was not on pred and went competely bonkers! Since you are off the Paxil now maybe the pred won't be so hard too handle -I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Thanks for sharing the shoes, Fluffy

Fluffy,  I totally understand fearing the pred. monster.  I think it has contributed to my not being able to emotionally handle the ra diagnosis/pain as well as I would have liked.  It makes me feel like I am PMS and I had a hysterectomy !!!!  It also makes me crave sugar by the handfull.  I have not gained more than eight pounds, all in my belly

Still taking the Prednisone, 5 days now, I have felt a little bit hungrier, but haven't gained any weight and I dropped a few more pounds by Monday, and will get weighed in actually tomorrow at the Neuro.

I think the effects I felt before were more from the Paxil weaning and prednisone together, though I am only on a low dose of Prednisone, 10 mg.

I am hyper inside, but not so much on the outside.  I had a few outbursts during this with my husband, but that was to be expected.  Though we don't ever fight, we had been having some issues personally, and it actually felt good to open my mouth and let it out.

I have been falling asleep at night time, but I'm also much more active during the day, but I am waking early - today 5:00 am.

I have cut all bread from my diet now, though continue to eat small portions of rice, or pasta and lots of salad or vegies at dinner, with the bulk of my meal at night being protein, turkey, chicken, lean red meat.

Still doing the slim-fast breakfast and the cottage cheese or yogurt lunch.

The pain in my hands haven't gone down yet, and my hands are still very swollen.

I was told that I may end up taking the MTX instead of the Plaquenil if this doesn't seem to help.  I do know that the 10 mgs. don't seem to be helping yet, and I assumed Prednisone was a fast-acting drug.

I hope everyone has a pain free day and they can find a better cure than this.

Thanks for listening everyone and I will check back soon.

Hi fluffy. Applause to you for your commitment to your diet. The smaller doses of prednisone don't seem to do much for me either. But as I mentioned in an earlier post, the higher doses give me anxiety attacks. Taking 10 mg a day right now, and honestly, I can't feel any difference if I take it or not. If i take 25, I can really feel improvement. Yet I'll be buzzing around in this wheelchair like chicken little.  LOL

Oh, this is such fun.
