What pain meds prescribed | Arthritis Information

My doctor has been telling me to take advil but it does little or nothing.
What pain meds do your doctors prescribe?

Now that I am off pred I think I may ask for someting else but anything with codeine in it makes me really sick. My stomach gets upset. So I have stayed away from asking.
I dont really know whats out there for RA.
Was taking Ultram until recently and switched to Lortab.  Pain in knees overode Ultram.  If need be will go back to Ultram.  If it weren't for the knees I wouldn't need any pain meds.Vicodin is a tylenol based drug and has never upset my tummy but, like you, anything codeine does.  I am currently on oxycontin which is a very strong pain med and not usually readily prescribed by rheumys.  I am seeing a pain doctor at a pain clinic who prescribes them for me.  You have every right to ask for something stronger!

Every pain med I've tried made me sick.  Now I'm using the fentanyl pain patch.  First pain reliever that hasn't made me sick.

Hi all, me too, I'm looking for 'something' that goes with this MTX, Remicade and doesn't cause worse problems (the stomach) than the disease! Is that too hard? LyndaI take percocet and also have vicodin for days when the pain isn't as bad. I also have codiene when it's really not that bad (I don't remember one of those days anymore??)

I had to go to a pain clinic to get anything stronger than vicodin...my RD kept telling me the pain was all in my head....and I just needed to get on a higher dose of anti-depressants. Now that I'm ON those, he doesn't know WHAT is wrong with me. LOL.

Yes, I am now seeing a new RD. I was reffered to the pain clinic by my GP, my RD wouldn't reffer me, just would give me a name. I was SO ticked.

But yes, you should ask for something else!!! Tylenol and Advil do NOTHING for me....and never really have.
I do 12 hour pain relief with extended release morphine and have percocet for those really bad days when I have breakthru pain.

sarah, why did you change your name?

kel

I take 7.5/325 or 10/325 Norco hydrocodone and it is easy on my stomach that I get from a pain Dr.

Yes; I thought you were Sarah/Hurts. Now it says Lynda? Confused.

I take Tramadol at night only or on weekends if I'm home to stay and know I won't be driving anywhere. I also take some muscle relaxers at times that are helpful.

I do however stick to just IUB OTC during the day. Usually takes more than the recommended dose on the bottle. Actually if I find it nessesary to take it I have to take twice the recommended dose; but that's still only 800mg which is basically the same as a prescription NSAID. You might give that a try.

Thinkthin - I have been on no pain meds, and the past three nights in a row have woken up around 3-5 with horrendous pain - one night in my stomach, next night the bottom of my right foot, last night in my mid back.  Bizarre.  Plus the usual daily aches and pains of having RA, lupus, blah blah.  I also have severe heaches, which never go away, but lately the top of my head feels like its going to blow off.

Anyway, today, my new primary was surprised to realize (after seeing me three times in two months) that I am on no pain meds by the rheumy, for over a year.  She said there was no reason for me not to be on pain meds with what I am dealing with, so we talked, and she is calling in Ultram and Flexeril for me as being non-narcotic based, and I finally disclosed to her that I am a recovering alcoholic to and want her to keep a close eye on my pain medication usage because alcohol and pain pills are weaknesses for me.  She was wonderful about it.  Good luck  Cathy

Cathy, I dont know how you have been dealing with all that pain in the last year.
I am glad you have a new doctor who can understand your needs, That is the most importnt thing.
Make sure you keep after her if the pain meds dont work.

I didn't use any prescription pain medication for years. Course I've been on a good DMARD treatment for many years, but I never asked for it and they never offered it.

I started having HORRIBLE back problems a few years ago though and since then I've been using muscle relaxers and Tramadol ever since. Still only at night and when things are at their worst; but I can see where some people wouldn't want or need them.

I know a lot of people on these sites that don't use any at all. Course we all know our pain levels are difference as well as our tolerance for that pain as well.

I find nsaids the best pain reliever for me. They actually get rid of swelling and stiffness that are causing the pain rather than masking it.

There are about 30 nsaids on the market, with luck you'll find one that works and does not cause you problems. The docs are pretty easy with prescribing them because they are not narcotic. But it can be a long search.

best wishes
