if I am not longer taking the mtx?? I am on 3mg of folic acid daily but I stopped the mtx back in Feb I continued to take the folic acid thinking it was good for me but I am on SOO many drugs, anyone see any harm in stopping it? My rheumy won't take phone calls unless you are literally dying and then they tell you to go to the er. Yeah, I know I need a new rheumy but I see the pain doctor next week and hoping to get somewhere with her instead.
Michele,
We had an article in our newspaper yesterday that said for some people too much folic acid wasn't good. Especially when it comes to colon cancer. It said that it was ok as long as the colon is free of microscopic cancer cells but that once cancer starts, folic acid may feed it's growth. Just a thought.
Yes. You can stop it. Your pharmacist would be an excellent resource for questions like these also when your doctor's office can't be bothered.
They won't even let you pose the question to a nurse there? I'd definately look for a new doctor if that's the case. Who exactly do they think they are? That's rediculous!
I would imagine you can stop the folic acid. The mtx stays in your system about 6-8 weeks after stopping it. Yeah, I absolutely HATE my rheumys office. Will search out a new one after I talk tot he pain doc next week. My next appt with her is mid august but she gave me a years worth of humira so I really don't HAVE to see her for anything.I took MTX for I guess two years without even taking Folic Acid. I didn't really have any bad side effects and I told my doctor I didn't want another pill to have to take. He said it was fine.
I started having some problems in my legs likely due to Humira but he suggested trying folic acid and seeing if that helped.....and I just never stopped. What's one one pill at this point, right?
Peace & Love....Neasy
It's unlikely you need as much as you've been prescribed for use with MTX. The amount you can get in the OTC folic acid or the kind that's mixed in with a daily would be about as much as you'd need.
You can take too much and it's not realy good for you then. You might want to question your doctor about a proper dose without MTX.

Very true Lovie...thank you for mentioning that.
