Humira injections, fast or slow? | Arthritis Information

i have a ? i inject my humira slowly, very slowly because of the burning of the medicene.when i do it fast it hurts really bad.  does anyone else inject it slowly?  i dont know if its just a mental thing with me but it seems to help.  i hate doing it in the tummy though because i'm more sensitive there and on the video the lady injects it in the hip area. does anyone else inject it in their hip? i called humira and they said to ask my dr.  can i have your thoughts and experiences please?

SLOWLY!!! Yes.

My husband injects it for me....and he prefers the butt. Not sure if this suits him best or me, but it does seem to be a good "fatty" spot to do it. We went over it with my RD nurse, and she approved the spot.

Best of luck to you. I've been doing since december and weekly since May and it still burns at times. I can't figure out exactly the trick. We've done it on several occations where I barely felt it at all....and other times it hurts like hell!!

Let me know if you find the secret.

Lovie

I've described my injection style before, but here it is again.

I remove  the humira about a half hour before the shot, and go up to my study with the syringe, an ice pack a cup of coffee and my wipes. I rest the syringe on the rim of my coffee cup, to bring it to BODY temperature, not just room temp.. ( room temp is only about 70 degrees and your body is about 98. that much temp difference is shocking. Just before I do the shot I roll the syringe firmly between my palms until I can't feel the syringe there, It and my hands are equal temps.

I ice my tummy for a good long time, then taking the wipe I clean the skin and wait til the alcohol has DRIED.

I slide the needle in at an angle, and when my tummy has been iced properly I don't even feel it go in. I then press the plunger slowly and steadily at a slow count while I chant this affirmation.."my toes won't hurt, my ankles won't hurt, my knees won't hurt, my hips won't hurt, my spine won't hurt, my fingers won't hurt, my wrists won't hurt, my thumbs won't hurt, my elbows won't hurt, my shoulders won't hurt, my jaw won't hurt." If I say that chant in a calm tone I finish it and the shot simultaneously.

I almost never feel a thing, sometimes a slight stinging imediately afterwards but certainly not as bad as a sensitive tooth, or a stubbed toe..

A friend form one of the  RA boards offered me this comment... which hurts more? the shot or the pain it ends? After that bit of wisdom I decided even if it did sting it was well worth it.

Wow Kathy,

I don't even inject and I feel relieved after that description

seriously, I will remember that for the furture if need be.

Good luck Lisa, let us know how you do

I am new to this site, but I have been on Humira since April.  I have already had my left shoulder and my right hip joint replaced.  I don't have a lot of pain with the injection but it doesn't seem to be stopping the joint destruction.  I have started to have increased pain in the groin area since I have been on the Humira, and that is a sign of the hip joint going bad.  anyone else have any similar experiences??  Everything I read about Humira is good, but it doesn't seem to be working for me
I am new to this site, but I have been on Humira since April.
