I saw my rheumy today and I am going to start on Imuran. Do I still need to take folic acid, or is that not needed with this med? Anything else I should now about this drug?

Imuran is kind of a wimpy drug compared to MTX. You do not need Folic acid. It has lowered my white blood count..but thats about it.
My doc said immuran is a step up from mtx. I think they are just different. You don't need folic acid with immuran.

I've taken Imuran for a long time to treat vasculitis but never had to supplement folic acid.Thanks for the replies. That's really interesting about the relative strengths..I hadn't even thought about it and I can't find any really clear answers when I googled it.
Between my multi-vitamin and my B complex, I'm already taking 0.8 mg/day of folic acid, so I think I'll just discontinue the additional 1 mg/day I got by prescription.
