New pain in thumbs | Arthritis Information

Hey everybody.Hope everyone is doing good today.

I went to the gym today. The pain started in my thumbs again but this time it hurts not only at the base of the thumbs but around towards the underside of my wrist. The pain has moved down.I bet a lump will come up soon.

If a dr. drains fluid from a lump can RA be diagnosed that way?

Thanks,

Sheila

Hey Sheila

When I read your post Im like she sounds like me. I dont know how to answer your question, but I can defintely tell you that thumb pain is part of arthrits. I have lately been having monstrous pain in my hands and feet, which makes it hard even to turn pages in a book. Ive also noticed that my thumb swells right in the middle where it bends, and hurts like heck to touch it. What you could do is keep a journal of all of your symptoms in detail, what time of the day they happen, and how they affect your ability to do normal everyday activites. Then as soon as you possibly can get in to your doc and let him know exactly how you are feeling, bring the journal with you too. Hope this helps you. Feel better hon.

Hi,

I'm not sure about the fluid/diagnosis either, but
keeping a journal is a good idea. I think I need to
start that too!

Hope you find out something soon. Sorry your
having to deal with this pain!!

I can suggest that you either obtain a thumb brace or wear a wrist brace (I have both but prefer the hand/wrist brace over the thumb one) when it is flaring or you know you are going to be doing something that usually causes aggravation to that area.

Testing the fluid?   I am not aware that they do test it.   I would further discuss it with your RD.

Hang in there... brighter days are coming !!!!!

My rd perscribed thumb splints and they do help greatly!!! If you have insurance ask your rd about it because they will usually pay for one set of braces a year.  I have gone through 2 right hands thumb splints due to work!!!!

ps is you purchase them w/o insurance they cost about a piece from a good orthopedic shop.

I have a splint for my right thumb I bought at a pharmacy.I lost the splint my orthopedic gave me.

Do they have splints that support the thumbs and the wrists at the same time. The one I have now does somewhat.

What can you do if the pain is spreading into your other fingers? How do you protect those joints? My pointer finger is swollen along with right thumb.I am feeling more pain in my left hand now than before. It was mainly the right but it is spreading.

I am taking tylenol arthrits right now. Can't take any anti-inflamatories due to gastris in my stomach which has caused some bleeding in my stomach.I had this long before the need for all these pain meds. What is the best to help with pain...heat or ice and do any of the arthritis rubs really work?

Also,What is the best over the counter meds. for dry eyes?

I think that covers it.

Thanks for your help...Sheila

Sheila what do you do? Are you working, is it repetative work, etc? When I was on 3rds I had to wear my right thumb splint to work all the time or I would be in severe pain.  If it has gone to your index fingers then it sound like you are overworking and overcompensating for the problem.  What a thumb splint does is is keep you from bending the thumb which causes more pain to the area.  My thumb splint covered the base onf my thumb and part of the hand besides some of the wrist.  You may need to slow down what you are doing, find another position at you place of business, or take a leave to let the area get some rest and healing.  My pain was caused by the freight I worked with and openning up cases of stock.  The position I have now will evetually allow me to do less climbing, openning up cases, and less stress on the body.  If you have vacation coming up I would suggest not doing anything on the vacation that would cause more stress to the thumb area let it rest.  I hope this helps, I can't help you on the meds becasue I am on nsaids and enbrel and will be starting arava too.  Good luck, let me know how you are doing, Shelia.  meme

ps Sheila has the dr prescribed pain patches??  12 hrs on 12 hrs off.  They can be cut to fit whatever area you use them on.  I use to wear them under the splints.  They were a big help!!!
