Plastics & Cancer | Arthritis Information

Good Morning, I received this email from my daughter and wow it opened my eyes. I just took a water bottle out of my freezer this morning. Scary stuff. I just had to share w/ my new croonies.

Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins
>This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as
>well.
>No plastic containers in micro. No water bottles in freezer. No plastic wrap
>in microwave...
>
>A dioxin chemical causes cancer, especially breast cancer.
>Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your
>plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the
>plastic.
>Recently, Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital ,
>was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins
>and how bad they are for us.
>He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using
>plastic containers...
>This especially applies to foods that contain fat.
>He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases
>dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body...
>Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic
>containers for heating food... You get the same results, only without the
>dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should
>be removed from the container and heated in something else.
>Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to
>use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc.
>He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved
>away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the
>reasons...
>Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous
>when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked,
>the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic
>wrap and drip into the food.
Cover food with a paper towel instead.
>This is an article that should be sent
>to anyone important in
>your life!

You can check to see if the scare-mails that get sent around are legitimate from a number of sources. This particular one I found on Snopes at http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/cookplastic.asp . Most of the time they are not true (as in this case).

Wow! Thanks! Good to know. SOB, just goes to show, just because it's written, doesn't make it so. I still never use styrofoam, anywhere.I know it's unproven but I still don't microwave plastic. It just seems like it
must be wrong somehow.

I put snopes.com on my favorites as a reference. Thanks!

They dispelled the dioxin urban legend, but there is link at the bottom for further info.  It says "cooking with plastics."  There is an interview with an expert from John Hopkins who talks about other problems like phthalates, which are estrogen like substances, that can be leached out of plastics. So, we still should not microwave with plastics.

I have not used plastic for a couple of years now.  I am also wondering about the new cups that McD and others are using for their coffee.  I just do not trust these companies as the bottom line is profit. Why are soda and soft drink manufacturers allowed to use plastic?  Money of course. How many of you travel around with a bottle of water in your car? Left in the heat or cold, that water is not safe to drink.
Do you ever wonder why so many people are allergic to dairy products?  The cows are injected with antibiotics and hormones and then they are fed food that is questionable, the water they drink is contaminated and even if they are field fed, the grass is contaminated from acid rain, dioxins and the list goes on. Then they slaughter the cow for meat consumption and we eat the poison anyway.
Scary world we live in as threats are coming from every direction.

I'm with you now and then, don't buy plastic unless I absolutely have to.
Same with styrofoam, hate that stuff. Don't buy bottled water. Try to buy in
glass. sometimes though, there is no getting around it but I try to do my
part. Thanks for the snopes.com. I'm gonna book mark it too.
