per MD I have Osteoarthritis not Rheumatoidarthritis, yet on ocasion my hands flare up with burning pain (like light sunburn), I now have nodes (lumps)on the joint near the nails.  MD suggests hot wax.  Has anyone found a better way to get a more lasting relief, so I can sleep. Thanks.

I have had the same problem for some time. The pain with me is at the base of both thumbs. At first I thought it was carpal tunnel, which I have never been told it wasn't. The hot wax works really good but as you said it is temporary. During the day I run them under warm/hot water and rub as I am doing that. Sometimes this helps. There are times I get jabbing pain in them. Have you ever experienced that? I am losing all strength in them too. I have a hard time holding on to anything the least bit heavy. Analgesics don't seem to work much either. I put capsazin on them and woke up in the middle of the night with them on fire! I gave it to my daughter thinking I was just having a reaction. She put it on her knees and ended up in the tub in the middle of the night. It only caused us more pain. Good luck!

Lindathe problem you had with that cream i have as well with all capsicum based ones . i thought i must have had an allergic reaction to them. so now i use the ones that cool instead of heat and they work really well. my PA began in my hands and its awful as you need hands for everything . i found when they get really bad i wear my wrist/hand braces to bed and the next day they arent so bad.

Hi,

OA of the hands is one of the hardest things to deal with. The pain will wake you up during the night. I don't know what you're taking but you may need to switch to nasids. I also wear splints at night. My splints are special ones from the doctor. The cooling rub on creams help too. Also watch what you lift as this will make your hands hurt. I've also had the hot wax treatment. It made my hands feel so good.

After dipping them in the wax, I would place a warm moist heat around them. I would sit there for 7 mins. When the timer went off, I was ready to go. Had fun removing the wax. If you go this route, remember to use a plastic wrap on your hands after dipping. Then on top of this you will place your warm moist heat and "cook" for 7 mins.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi kbean,

The pain that you're having at the base of the thumb, I've had too. I pulled the joint apart and was having the same trouble as you. The pain got so bad that it would run up my forearm. Had cortisone injected into the joint that didn't help. Wore a special brace 24/7, but that was only to prevent more damage. Finally had to have surgery and that helped. The only thing now is that I can't do any heavy lifting!

Hope that you feel better knowing that someone else has gone through this too.

For joint pain, I found something that helped me tremendously. Its called MonaVie - a blend of 19 fruits full of antioxidants, phytonutrients and other stuff. I got it from a woman at www.mymonavie.com/dwatson. It worked great for me, let me know if you have the same results.

Want to say thank you to all who sent ways for me to cope with the pain in my hands.  Trying everything,  hot wax the best, would like to know more about the bending of the fingers.

Hello everyone, Kathy here  i was wondering if anyone gets jabbing pains near the base of the neck that shoots up in the head. Then I get terrible head aches from it.i was just told I have osteoporosis of the spine i am 52 and I have RA in my hands my thumbs get very sore and i do get jabbing pain in them often. I am a housekeeper for a hospital in IL and I am starting to think I will not be able to do my job very much longer. If anyone out there has any input as to what I can do for my pains in my neck and head please let me know.

Peace and Love

Ceja, Welcome to the forum. Have you had xrays of your cervical spine/neck?  Was that how the diagnosis was made?  Are you on NSAIDs of any kind?  Also have you had xrays of your hands?  I don't have much advice for you except that if you're not taking a NSAID then it might help you if you got an RX.  Are you seeing a rheumatologist?  You have a tough job, research Social Security Disability.  Once you get the pain under control it will be easier to work.  Keep us updated on how you're doing.  Take care. Lindy
