Oxycontin not enough!!!! | Arthritis Information

Hi guys my doc switched me from Endone to oxycontin slow release on Thurs, I have decided to just change back to Endone as I can take them 4-6hourly, as the Oxycontin slow release was wearing off after 6-7 hours, and I couldn't top anything up as it was 12 hourly?????  I am not putting up with that, as it is the weekend decided to just switch back.  Janie. Hi janiefx, my 13 year old daughter has just come off oxycontin having been on it for about a month. She started on 20 mg and moved down to 10, then 5, then off. All the time she was on it, she also had the option to top up with oxynorm 5mg, for breakthrough pain, up to 3 times daily if needed. I think you should ask your doc about a breakthrough prescription.HEY I CAN RELATE I HAVE TRIED ALL SORTS OF THINGS THE 12 HR OXYC WEARS OFF TO QUICK THE REGULAR STUFF WEARS OFF FAST AND I END UP TAKING TOO MUCH. I JUST STARTED A 3 DAY PAIN PATCH FENYAL(SP) AND USING REGULAR OXYC FOR WHEN MY PAIN IS WORSE WHICH IS 3 TO 4 A DAY. I DO LIKE IT MUCH BETTER I DO NOT FEEL SO STONED ALL THE TIME AND I AM SLEEPING FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2 YRS I USED TO WAKE UP IN TERRIBLE PAIN WHEN THE OXYC WOULD WEAR OFF AND THEN HAVE TO WAIT AT LEAST 30 MIN FOR IT TO KICK IN . ANYWAYS I AM STILL HOPING FOR A MIRCLE DRUG THAT EASES UP MY PAIN AND I CAN COME OFF SOME OF THIS STUFF BUT HAVE NOT HAD MUCH LUCK JUST STARTED HUMIRA 3 SHOTS AND I GOT PNUEMONIA ALREADY CRAZY. ANYWAYS I DO LIKE MY PAIN PATCHES SO FAR.....TERESA

Janie, I agree that you really should have a breakthru drug. My pain management doc has always given me a breakthru rx, no matter what my main pain med was.

I am currently on methadone 15mg 4 time a day plus morphine IR, 30mg up to 4 per day. I don't usually need that much morphine, but it's available if I do need it.

My pain doc said there was a study, not long ago that said something about the hormones(?) that women have that makes them respond well to methadone. It supposedly works better for many women than some of the others. She really keeps on top of things and will do whatever it takes to ease my pain as much as possible.

Oxycontin and the other "oxy's" are supposed to be very good for pain control, but I am allergic to them, so I have no first hand info. on that.

Good luck. Do try to talk to your doctor tomorrow about a breakthru rx. Let us know what happens.

Gentle hugs,

Nini

I switched to oxy 20 mg about 6 weeks ago and had oxy IR 5 for breakthrough pain.  When my script ran out, she upped it to the 40mg every 12 hours.  Its better but I still have a lot of pain.  I have not tried the methadone or the patches yet.

Janie,  I am going in this afternoon to try to get mine raised.  I have been on it one year.  If my doctor does not raise it, I will fire her.  All my doctors seem to be determined to put me on morphine.  I feel that should be my decision.  I know how frustrating it is to be in pain when you know that doctors can help but their egos and fears do not do the right thing!  We deserve all the help we can get and we deserve to make decisions about our bodies.  I know people are on higher doses of oxycotin than I am.  Until there are no other alternatives, I like oxycotin, it does not make me feel high and is the best pain reliever I have tried.  I am just building a tolerance.

Merry/Teresa - I am so glad you are getting some relief.  I have always felt like you and I have had very similar experiences with RA.  It is good to hear good news from you.
