MRSA Question | Arthritis Information

This is probably a stupid question.

I have an appointment with my RD this Thursday to talk about starting methotrexate.  I just found out my dad has MRSA.  I know when you are exposed to it, you can be a carrier.  Do I need to mention this to the RD?  Do I need to make sure I’m not a carrier first?  Methotrexate lowers immune response, right?  Am I worrying too much?

MTX does surpress the immune system. I would mention it to your RD. You probably are not a carrier, but its better to be safe than sorry in these situations. I had MRSA from working in the hospital lab. It only took about a week after starting antibiotics to clear it up.Gosh, I do not have the answer to your questions, but I do know that MRSA is a very serious infection.  Please be careful and gather all of the information that you can about this and please keep us informed. discuss it with your doctor....

I got MRSA in my hip from the hospital. It took a long time to get rid on it and I was told you can't ever really be sure it's gone. Are you worried about getting it from your father? It's unlikely you're a carrier although the nurses in my hospital told me that they probably all have it from working there.

Ask your doc, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Kweenb, I work around MRSA everyday. It is a serious infection and most
people carry it in their nasal passages. If our immune system goes awry, we
do have an increased risk of contracting this bug. I was concerned about
this and asked my RD. He said not to worry as long as I used good hand
washing and all other precautions. If your father has MRSA and he does not
know how he got it, it is call community acquired MRSA. They recommend
all members of his immediate family be treated for this infection as it can go
from one family member to another and back and may never fully clear up
as it is always lingering. Be careful around this bug as you get further into
your treatment. It is a timely and money consuming treatment to try to fight
it and as someone else mentioned, you never really know if it clears up.
Hope this helps.

This may be a dumb question, but what is MSRA?

MRSA is Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus.  A staph infection resistant to antibiotics. It is not resistent to all antibiotics. It is usually sensitive to some antibiotics.
Many people have to be on more than one to clear it up.
