Cortisone | Arthritis Information

I have been on the internet trying to find out something about Cortisone shots. I have been reading some horror stories about these shots.

The side effects that are posted, are they for shots or for pill form? If you have had a shot and get the side effects how long before they go away. Is it days, weeks, years? How long before the side effects start. I am very sorry now that I got the shot. I have been very shakey today.

I also read that it can cause blood clots something my doctor has been concerned about with me. I am surprised that she gave it to me. I asked for it but I was in a lot of pain at the time. I got it yesterday and so far all I had was a very shakey feeling.

She gave me 2mg. At first I thought she said 4 but now I realize it was 2. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi kbean, I have had several cortisone shots over the yrs in my shoulder joints for bursitis but I've never had a problem that I know of. I would get the shakey feeling if I took the pred pills tho. Maybe your sugar is dropping and eating several small meals a day may help.I would usually feel better from the pain by the next day after a shot, so I would call the Dr. and tell her what is going on if you don't feel better soon.  Good Luck and God Bless...

Linda, my hubby and I both just had cortizone shots.  His was in his cervical spine.  They said that can happen sometimes, but not to be concerned.

I had mine in my knee last week and I am so much more comfortable!  I am really happy with the results.

Can either one of you tell me how long the shot lasts? How long the side effects last? Also is 2 mg. a large dose or small dose? I should have asked these questions when I had the chance with my doctor. I am so glad you guys are here.

Do any of the drugs you take interfere with the Cortizone? I am on Welbuturin XL and I saw that is one of the meds that they warn about interaction. They are probably talking about large doses over extended length of time. I still haven't had the benefits from it yet. I guess it takes time. Appreciate any answers you can give me.

Thanks The shots have a lot less side effects than the pills, especially oral doses taken for long periods of time.  I had a shot in my wrist, It worked wonders but only lasted a couple of weeks.  Other people it can last a lot longer.  Was your shot just inter muscle or was it in a joint?

Well a lot depends on your own body and how it responds, as well as which joint they are treating.

My husband's doctor said that some people get a good year or more out of the epidural injections, while some need to come back in 6 months or so.  Some folks don't respond until they have had 2 or 3.  My hubby is some better, but not pain free yet.  His problem comes from OA in the cervical spine with bone spurs and a pinched nerve.  He's kinda in a wait and see period, but he is definitely some better because he can sleep on that side now, and couldn't before.  He had his shot about two weeks ago, and it took a good week before he felt better.

My MIL had them in both of her knees and she did well for over 3 years.  I am hopeful that I will be as lucky with mine.

I would love to get them in my hips, but apparently they don't work that well in the hip, and it is a bit more complicated to give as well.  My doctor told me that if I was going on vacation or had a wedding or special event that I needed a short term "fix" for, he could give me shots in my hip, but that the relief it brought would only last a few weeks.

It never occurred to me to ask about dosage.  I can't help you with that one.  Neither of us have had any side effects or drug interaction issues.

Hope that helps.  You should feel free to call you doctor and ask him about your concerns.

Thank you everyone. I have pain everywhere and a pinched nerve in neck. She gave it to me in the butt because I have inflammation in my lungs. I have severe emphysema. Just was in the hospital for pleursy pain and pneumonia. They gave me a shot of Toradal and it took the pain away. But still having trouble with a little pain in chest today too. Just very shakey!

I sure hope it gets out of my system soon!

You have all been very helpful!

Linda

I've had numerous injections over the years and I highly recommend them. I always have great results. What side-effects are you referring to exactly? Predisone isn't my favorite; but I have good results with it too although I've never used it long term and I'd warm against that if possible.

I've only had one like you referred to. In the butt. The ones I've had directly in the joint do work well.....although I find some of them painful; but well worth it!

I hope you are feeling better soon. Try to relax. If you have any pain pills take a couple and go veg out in bed and watch TV propped up on about 8 pillows. Two behind your back, two behind your head, one under each arm.....and two at your knees and ankles. Hopefully in the next 48 hours you'll be a cortisone fan like I am.

Take Care.

OH~I see your meds now. Sorry.

I'll admit I'm not that great with meds I'm not on.....but it doesn't look like you are on anything to slow the progression of the disease. Hopefully after these recent test your doctor will adjust that.

I was feeling extremely shakey yesterday but today feeling pretty good. She said I would get a burst of energy and increased appetite. Has anyone gotten that with one shot? So far I haven't. Hopefully I will feel relief today. Thank you all for your responses.
