ouch! man that hurts much worse than mtx. shot! it is 50mg,prefilled syringe,i warmed at room temp. and put it in my thigh. it wasnt the needle that hurt, it was when the med was going in. I sure this does the trick for me, as the mtx. alone doesnt seem to be helping:(

Good luck!!!  We will be waiting to hear the results on how you are doing!!!

Ice the area where you are going to inject until it is numb and that helps with the burning of the med when you inject.

Try to go a little slow with the injection. That helps stop the burn.

Hi Kel,

Good luck and hope it works well for you!!  It can take awhile to really feel the effects...let us know how you do.  I've noticed with mine that sometimes they burn and sometimes they don't.  The last one I did burned like hell and I just assumed I didn't leave it out at room temp long enough.

Thanks gals! nice to know people care and support me

I think the stomach is much better. The thigh was more painful to me and I get injection site reactions so the bigger the area the bigger the lump. Sometimes I have my hubbey inject the backs of my arms.

I prefer the 25mg twice weekly- not really painful at all.My Sureclick injections hurt pretty bad at first until someone told me to make sure the alcohol is dry before taking the shot.  Now it isn't bad at all.when I was doing embrel shots, I iced the area before and immediately after pulling the needle out and it definitely helped. I did them in my stomach... I took my embrel shot this morning,  I iced the area,  let it set out quite a while before hubby gave me my shot in the hip and it still burned, everyshot I have taken burned.  Tomorrow I will take my mtx, how long will it be before the swelling improve in my fingers and feet?

I'm sorry MaeMae but there is really no cut and dry answer to your question.  Some people seem to improve quite quickly while with others the swelling just seems to have to run it's course regardless of medications.  Hopefully you will be one of the people that get quick relief.  Do you have prednisone that could help you manage?

The whole Enbrel injection burning ordeal is so strange to me.  Mine burn sometimes and sometimes they don't while others always have burning and still others have never had burning.  Figures...the medications are as bizarre as the disease itself.  I'm going to try going slower with the injection and ice the area myself today and see how it goes.

Neasy, I use the sure click injection, I am not on prednisone, my rhumy has me on mtx, embrel and tramadol, if the swelling don't improve by the time I see her again in august, hopefully she will try something else.  I will be going to california for a week in July, and I am worried about the walk to my connecting flight at the airport, I guess I can double up on my tramadol to ease the pain.

MaeMae39261.3782407407When I was doing the enbrel, the 25mg didn't burn at all but the 50mg did, I guess there is a preservative in it that some people are sensitive to.  Now I do humira and it still burns!  Aw well, it just last a minute or so it would be nice though if they could make it so it doesn't sting.

Micheleb same here....while I was on the study I did two 25's and never had any burning sensation.  It wasn't until I recently got off the study and my RD put me on the 50's I got the lovely STING.  I just realized something too...my RD wrote the script for the sureclick and those wankers at the pharmacy gave me pre-filled injections.

MaeMae...perhaps you can put a call into your RD and request they call in a script for prednisone.  If you're interested in doing that make sure you tell them you only want it in the event of a flare so that they can script it out accordingly.  I currently take pred every day as we have been unable to get my RA under control.  However, there was a time when my RD only had me take it during bad flares.  Be sure to educate yourself on prednisone if you are unfamiliar with it so that you know what you are putting into your system.  You might not even need it but it's always nice to have on hand if you do.  As far as the flight, you can always request wheelchair assistance which is at no cost to you so that you don't have to make the long walk.  You can call your airline to get more information.

Peace & Love...Neasy

I did wheelchair assistance when I flew last since i just had a high tibial osteotomy done 3 weeks prior and was non weight bearing and on crutches.  There was no way that I was going to crutch it thru O'Hare airport.  My airline was extremely nice about it.  They had a wheelchair ready for me at check in and one ready for me as soon as I crutched thru the door of the airplane.  It also gets you thru security a lot faster.  You do not have to go thru the metal detectors.  They wheel you around them and just wave you down with a wand.  I did have to take off my shoes and my brace.  And they slid my crutches thru the machine.  I agree with injecting slow, I just finished my first month of Enbrel...My hubby gave me my second shot in the arm I thought I was going to knock him out. It wasn't his fault , he just pushed it in too fast. I'll stick to the stomach and nice and sloooooowwwwwww!

I tried icing the area on my last injection and it did seem to help with the burning.  Give it a try.

anewbeginning....how are you doing??  How have the enbrel injections been going?  Are you feeling any better?  For that fact of the matter...how is everyone??

Gramma, i have had two shots of the enbrel so far, the second hurt more than the first. but i didnt use your icing techniuqe. i will tomorrow for my third shot.I have not seen any side effects, but i also have not felt a benifit yet! I just had my third upd dose of mtx, last night. and feel like crap today:(  have not been able to decrease my pred.any more. i am at 7.5mg /day. This medicine just has not kicked in yet i guess? I was hopeing for some overnight cure from the enbrel but it hasnt happened yet. so i am comming to the conclusion, i will be one that lives in pain, stiff, and fatiuge alot!

thanks for checking on me

kel

Oh no!  Don't come to that conclusion.  You never know what's just around the corner Yeah, don't jump to that conclusion just yet.  It can take up to 3 months for biologics to kick in.  We ALL hope for overnight relief when we start new meds.  I know I did when I started the humira.  It took a few shots for it to eventually kick in.

If there is one thing we learn from having RA it is patience and how to play the waiting game.
