Walking!!!!!! OUCH!! | Arthritis Information

I've been  walking on my treadmill since June 5th for 30 min. a day and I've only lost 3 lbs!!!!! Ive been eating loads of vegetables and no fried foods and still nothing!!! Im  only on 5mgs of prednisone and arava maybe that's the reason it's not coming off fast.  One thing I do notice is that im so sore in the mornings and i was hoping that it would go away the more I walk. Im hoping that im not overdoing it. Im going to start Ian Smith's Extreme Fat Smash diet from the Celebrity Fit club on Monday.  I bought the book and it's going to take some getting used to on this diet. It's guaranteeing weight loss of 12 lbs within 3 weeks so we'll see. Anyone else doing anything to get the lbs off with better success????

Tara

To me 3 pounds since June 5th sounds pretty good. That's almost a pound a
week, which is a safe and reasonable weight loss rate. I say keep doing what
you're doing. 12 pounds in 3 weeks sounds exciting, but you'd probably
gain it all back in another 3 weeks, while 3 pounds in 4 weeks as a result of
small lifestyle changes will probably stay off for good. I know it's slow but
please be patient!

I have to agree with Gimpy on this one.  It is best to take the weight off in a slow and steady pace.  We all want our weight off RIGHT NOW but it is healthier to keep it slow and steady.  Remember, the weight didn't get put ON over night and it is not going to come OFF overnight.

Eating loads of veggies is great and avoiding the high fat foods is great also.  Just make sure that you are getting in enough calories to BURN.  If you do not take in enough calories your body uses what you do take it to keep it going and you do not have enough calories or energy to burn off any extra stuff.  Eating 30 minutes before any work out is a good idea also so you have the energy to work out and the extra calories are going to burn off.  Drinking lots of water helps also.

Good luck with the weight loss!!  I am in the process of doing it also.  I am going to sound weird with this...but the old cliche slow and steady wins the race really applies to weight loss and keeping it off.

I agree with gimpy too. and gramma, Slow and steady wins the race.  The faster you lose it the faster it will come back and find you.

0.5-2lbs is a normal safe weightloss.  Any diet that guarantees a specific weightloss in a specific timeframeis not one that you can stick with in the long run.  Find an eating plan that you can live with every single day of your life.  Permanant weightloss requires a lifestyle change not a temporary change in eating habits.

Hi and congratulations! I have the worst time losing weight and keeping it off!! Yes, pred will prevent you from losing.  I think you could subtract 2 # more for water retention. So you really have lost 5 #s!! I was on diuretics when I was taking pred and I'd lose 2 pounds overnight, then back up after the pill wore off?? 5 mgs of pred isn't a lot but it is enough to play with your appetite, make you crave foods , etc. (I surely understand). I've never done the treatmill, but I walk in deep sand on the beach, and swing the golf club, putting stress on my left foot (bottom), I'm not going to stop doing the exercises I love. I'm just getting my life back. I take a pain pill when I need it. I've lost a couple of pounds to get me back to 'the horrified stage' OH my gosh I can't believe I weigh this much.sincerely, Lynda

Just to say thanks to buckeye re sparkpeople.com  looks very interesting  ....since I have been feeling better (OA) and looking in the mirror after coming off pred. it seems it is time to shed these pounds...

I feel better than I've felt in years and look better. I went off my diet for 4 days last week and some of my joints started to hurt and become inflammed.  I went back on the diet on Saturday and today my joints are fine and no swelling.  For me diet has a profound effect on how I feel.  This loss was without exercising.  I can't exercise right now because of bone on bone in both knees.  I'm having a knee replacement in 2 weeks and the other knee replaced 6 weeks later.  It will be awhile till I can exercise.

I don't want to discourage you from any type of diet and I hope the new one works well for you but if it doesn't don't get discouraged.  Try monitoring what you eat on your own.  You need at least 1,200 calories per day optimum but make sure they're good calories.  Don't waste your calories on the bad stuff.

I'm 62 years old and it's hard to lose weight at this age but I'm proof that if you stick with a good diet plan then you can lose.  Good luck.  Lindy

Wow!!! What good advice everyone!!! Yes I was getting discouraged with just losing 3 lbs. You know how it is sometimes when you feel you work real hard and lose very little can be discouraging but im going to keep it up anyway.

Lindy what diet is it that you are going by??? Or are you just doing it on your own?? I never could get that lo carb counting and calorie counting thing down. I dont eat bread & potatoes but I do eat pasta sometimes. I've been trying hard to eat fruits by drinking smoothie's with my daughter.  I've  been buying low fat snacks and trying to watch my fat intake I think it's 15 grams per meal per day??  I hope I get good results cause I want my joints to feel better too.

I have lost 16 pounds since the end of March. You might want to try adding strength training to work out routine. It builds muscle and muscle burns fat much more quickly. I also have found that the eliptical is much better for me than the treadmill as far as the pain goes. The treadmill kills my feet and big toe joints.
As far as the eating is concerned, I have just cut back on food amounts period. That in combination with the working out seems to be doing the trick.

Good luck!

Nancy

I don't have a magic diet, I've cut my portions in half.  I eat low fat, low carb which means no flour, sugar, rice, potatoes, pasta, bread, corn, milk and cheese.   Now this is where it gets tricky - fruits have carbs but I eat fruits.  I allow myself these carbs and  I'll eat brown rice and low carb pasta and whole wheat bread, just not everday or at every meal.  If I want a sandwich I have one but that will be my only carbs for the day.  If I want fruit salad I have it and that will be my only carb for the day.  Basically, it's figuring out what is right for your body, age, and lifestyle.  I stay between 1,200-1,500 calories a day.  My fat grams are usually at 15 grams per day.  It's really low fat but that works for my body.  Once a week I have a pig out day - anything and everything I want and do you know that I really don't want the high fat and carb items.  Maybe a really good desert or fried potatoes for breakfast.

I think you're doing fine, don't be discouraged.  Take 3lbs of hamburger and hold it in your hands.  That's a lot of meat - that's what you've lost from your body!!! Read all the labels on the foods that you purchase.  Even many of the so called diet foods aren't.  They may be low sugar or no sugar but HIGH in fat, or low in fat and HIGH in sugar.  We've so conditioned our tastebuds to sugar and fat it's hard to retrain them.  After almost 5 months mine still need to be whipped into shape and lectured every once in awhile.

It's a lifestyle change, not just a diet.  And yes, I even have chocolate a couple of times a week.  I don't feel that I'm missing out on anything, especially when I was able to wear a sundress recently that was 2 sizes smaller.  I'm 35 lbs. from my goal but you know this is my present to myself this year.  Once I reach my goal I'm going shopping for a new wardrobe.  I just got the new Spiegel catalog and have several outfits circled that I plan on buying hopefully by Christmas.  Set some realistic goals for yourself.  Start with small goals.

Nancy, I'm really hoping that once my knees heel that I can start exercising again.  I go to the pool but it's a limited type of exercise.  Lindy

Thank you all so much for the advice. Linb im going to try your way and see if it works. You mean your meds dont affect your weight loss at all??? Geez if you can do it without working out i know I can..I hope

Tara

Excellent post Lindy.  What you are doing is basically what I am doing too.

Just remember everyone....the weight didn't come on overnight and it isn't going to come off overnight.

Amen to that Liz.

A weight loss of 3 pounds in 4 weeks is awesome.  Keep up the good work.  The advice you have received so far is excellent.

Weight loss is really simple....burn more calories than you take in although I do think there are some foods that causing water retention and bloating.  I think carbs can be a problems for some people.

Weight training is an excellent idea...if it doesn't hurt or tax your joints.  Start with very light weights and make sure your form is correct.  ( I think you said you had a trainer).  But weight does increase some as you add muscle.  the benefit is that muscle burns calories faster and it does strengthen your bones.

Keep up the good work.
