So... today I was looking online at jobs, not for myself, but for hubby. So, I come across an ad posted by the local hospital. My RD is part of the Professional Building of the local hospital. There was an "ad" that was to the effect of them seeking for a Rheumatologist/Internist who wants to have their own private practice.

I guess... my RD is going to retire when they find someone to take over, well if they find someone to take over.

It would be nice to have my RD still only 10 mins away instead of over an hour drive away, which is what I will be doing if I get another referral to a new RD.

I am unsure... if I want to get a referral now, and just stick it out until they get a new RD and maybe just maybe the new RD will take over my current RD's patient workload. Or Just go ahead and get referred to another RD and hope that when they do get a new RD I can get referred back to the one only 10 mins away.

Gosh Joonie I don't know what I would do if I were you. Why don't you call your RD's office and see what or who they recommend. I sure hope you can get the closer one, it's a big pain in the rear to have to see a Dr. out of town. We have to travel  about an hour to see just about any specialist, our town is too small to accomodate. Good Luck!

Wow...talk about being between a rock and a hard place on this one.  Whew.  I don't really know what to tell you on this one.  Take your time thinking this one thru to figure out what would be best for you.  Good luck with this and I am around if you need to talk about it.

Yeah, I know guys kinda is a hard decision.

But what IF they do not find someone to take over his practice? Then I will be screwed. Wait... I already am screwed

Have you considered calling the office and asking them what the game plan is?  My eye doctor recently sold his practice and retired.  I was really bummed about it as I absolutely adore him.  My eye doctor advised me of what was happening at my last appointment and assured me that he had absolute confidence in the doctor taking over his practice.  He also advised me that the new doctor wasn't changing anything with the practice and felt I would be very happy with him.  So perhaps it's possible that whoever takes over the practice will also take over all new patients and continue accepting all current health insurance that your doctor currently has.  Good luck Joonie!

Hi Joonie, I would call the office and ask them , tell them what you saw in the job ads. They might not be able to say anything but at least its worth a try.

Hope it works out for you!

Take care, Karin

Katrin - My currrent RD I am stuck with because he is convenient. Only 10 mins away... I can get anyone to take me to him and not have to get hubby to miss work.

My current RD is a sweet old man, but he is not worth for me to sit in his waiting room for an hour and then in the room almost another hour just to get 10 mins of his time, and then him not even address my problems I had worte down on a piece of paper for him while I was waiting in the waiting room. This is not the first time I have been to this RD, I had asked my then GP to refer me to another one and I got sent to one almost 2 hours away!

I really do not want to change RD's but my current RD is not doing much for me. I have this shoulder/back/neck issue I have been telling him about since I went back to him in '06. I have a burning sensation in my shoulder blades, and I keep having infections. I need something to be able to take while I am off all meds when I have an infection. I cannot tend to a 2 year old hyped up on pain pills and unable to move. Pain pills make me sleepy and all I do is is sleep while on them.

I am on medicaid, for now, and it is soo hard to get referrals to other doctors, from the medicaid doctor. I might not even get a referral like I am hoping. But I need a better quality of life, and right now, I am not having that. I am unable to do housework, I am unable to enjoy my kids, and I am unable to enjoy my husband. I am hurting, swelled, stiff and burning that it just takes up my day to deal with all of that.

Sorry you are in such a tough situation

Hope you feel better soon, Karin

The closest RD to me other than the one I have now, is 60 miles away
