Toxic-- Even water can be toxic | Arthritis Information

"Toxicity is a measure of the degree to which something is toxic or poisonous...

In the science of toxicology, the impact of an external substance or condition and its deleterious effects on living things: organisms, organ systems, individual organs, tissues, cells, subcellular units is the subject of study. A central concept of toxicology is that effects are dose-dependent; even water – generally not considered to be toxic – can lead to water intoxication when taken in large enough doses, whereas for even a very toxic substance such as snake venom there is a dose below which there is no dectectable toxic effect."

I go over this with my students. There are cases of people trying to pass
drug tests and they OD on water. It can be fatal.rocckyd39268.4804166667

That's great you are informing your students. What level and subject do you teach? Did you hear about the recent radio contest where there was a water drinking contest and the woman who won died (water on the brain)? Crazy! I guess my point is just that many things can be toxic (even healthy water) depending on the dose, allergies, etc.

Take care, Karin

I did go over that with them. They had not idea. Basically the water
washes all the necessary nutrients out of your system. EX=potassium
regulates your heart and so on.

I teach 7th and 8th grade science.

The air some people breathe in is toxic... smog?

Ah, here's a tid-bit for you. You know the idea that extacy has killed people is actually wrong? There are no proven cases of that drug acually killing someone. Now, in theory it SHOULD, I mean, it's made up of terrible things. But for some reason, it doesn't kill anyone. You know what all the kids die of? Water poisoning. Yup. The myth that you have to drink a lot of water when you take extacy was started in raves. When you're at a rave, the music and the environment is incerdibly fast paced and most people dance the entire night. Well even WITHOUT drugs, you would def. need to drink water. That's common sense. But somewhere along the line, someone falsely translated that into the need for water being caused by the drug.

Sooooo you end up with kids who do X for fun, and AREN'T doing any strenuous(sp) activity, drinking liters of water, gallons even. X is an upper, but in a muscle relaxer kind of way. You become very mellow and relaxed, happy and carefree. Your heart rate even slows some. Drinking all that water is esseintially, toxic. It has nowhere to go. So the kids that have died while on X, actually died because there was so much water in their bodies, it was litterally floating on their brains. They've died of BRAIN DAMAGE caused by WATER.

Now if that isn't the most insane thing I've ever heard.....but it's exactly how several doctors have told me, and it's what they tought us in school. We had an outbreak of people doing X, and no one could figure out who was dealing it. I guess someone thought the next best idea was to keep us educated about the drug. Silly, but not. Ya know?

So there's my story....lol

The air you breathe is where we pick up viruses and heavy metalsIf ya think about it everything is toxic. Good thing I am not obessive complusive about things being "toxic". I would be Joonie in the plastic bubble

Well my friend, who has Parkinson's, decided to take that advice.

She ended up going into a seizure and almost died.  The hospital said she was over-hydrated.  Just goes to show you, what's good for one is not always good for another.

And WATER, no less.
