Got my cripple sticker | Arthritis Information

Not real pc I know but I got it!  I had to renew my license anyways and its just one sheet of paper you need to have your doctor fill out so it was pretty simple, and free!  The sticker travels with me so if I ride with someone else, I can just take it with me.  Gotta save spoons where we can, right! Definitely gotta save those spoons Michelle, I have one too and I only use it on my bad days, I must admit, it is a great help, well done, Janie. Save spoons?  What do you mean by that? How do you get the handicapped sticker? I don't need it all the time, but there are days I definately DO!

Juliah...you can either go to your local drivers license facility or if your state does it, you can download the form from their website.

You fill out your portion of the form and then bring it to the doc office and they fill out and sign their portion of the form and you return it to motor vehicles.  You can either mail it in or turn it in at a local office.  My state charges (can you believe it) to process the form.

You can either have the plates that go on your car or like Michele has, the placard.  I prefer the placard because it is registered to me and I can take it with me no matter what car I am in.  They are also permanent or temporary.  I had a temp one over the winter when I was on crutches.  I no longer need it so I let it expire.  When I get my knee replaced I will get a temp one again.

Here is the spoon theory

Its a great way to explain to friends and family what it is like to be sick.

In MI, I just went to the secretary of state website, printed off a single page form, filled out the top section, my doctor filled out the bottom section.  I had to go and renew my license anyways so I just took the paper in with me, my card to hang on the rear view mirror was free, no processing fees or anything in my state.

They are such a big help!  I have a placard and I too try to use it only on the bad days, or days when I otherwise have to choose not to go to the store (or wherever).

I have a question for those who have one...are you required to carry a disabled ID (given by the state, like a drivers license, but mine looks like a car registration) in order to use the placard?  The reason I ask is that hubby and I have had many discussions about people who "police" handicapped spots and will harrass you if you don't look sick.  I know by law in NJ you're required to produce the disabled ID if a police officer asks, but I wasn't sure if you had to show it to just anybody who wants to challenge you.  Just curious.

I have a disabled placard. I picked up the form at the licensing office, filled out my portion and sent it to rheumy with stamped envelope to send back to me, then I took it back to licensing office. I did have to pay a fee, but i got handicapped license plates for my car and a hanger i keep in  my purse for cars I am a passenger in (hubby's or kids' cars). They also issued me a card i keep with my DL I can present if asked by a police officer. I have only been asked once and that was at a state campground where we were staying in a handicapped site.I have the permanent disabled placard.  I too chose that as in my state you can't have both the placard and the license plate.  When I use it in someone else's car I always have the id card they issued with me in case anyone questions it.  Actually, I just carry the card along w/my DL. Its plastic the size of  credit card.

Good news, Michele!

HAHA!!!!

I know this is off topic, but I notcie that people often describe their RA pain as "burning".  Is that typical?  My pain was/is never burning.  I always describe it as feeling like my bones are being ground together.  Just more reason to think I don't have RA at all.

Linda

Oh, and by the way, congrats on your stickers!!!

Not sure what is causing my burning pain.
