Eliminated Gluten... | Arthritis Information

been almost two months now w/o gluten. I have to say that I feel significantly better. I sense less overall inflamation too. I am also sleeping much better.

I know there is some doubt if there is indeed a relationship between gluten issues and RA/autoimmune. But I have had RA dx'd since I was 9...my intuition is that over time the inflammation from the RA has indeed damaged the small vessels supplying the villi. If that alone is the case then stopping the gluten should have resulted in an improvement overall for me. And, well I am feeling better overall. I am also not feeling bloated too. My blood sugar is slowly sliding back down from an average around 118 to 105 now and hopefully down around 90 where it has been my whole life. I suspect this chage was due to some sort of delyaed emptying thing.

Anyway, I just wanted to stop by and pass along that it can be worth a shot. Oh, I did eat some southern fried chicken the other day and was MISERABLE for about 3-days and even had a flare that is just now settling down.

Something that is amazing is how difficult it is to find foods w/o gluten or dairy (lactose issue we discovered a few years back).

I can add also that in my late 20s I simply cut out breads from my diet. No reason but that I was getting into shape and back to my "playing weight". When I did that I lost weight like crazy and it stayed gone until about 10 years back when i stopped paying attention. So maybe there has been a gluten issue all along...

Interesting cause and effect this RA and all it's systemic effects have.

Anyway, nice to see things down to a dull roar around here...will peek in tomorrow.hi breck
both my hubbie and daughter cant eat gluten or casein so we dont have any in the house.   no wheat, oats, barley, rye and no dairy.   we manage with me doing a bit of gluten free baking and everything else from the supermarket.   not too bad, but we always have a party when we find something we can eat at the supermarket!   just recently we've found some readymade sweet popcorn and some prawn crackers that we can add to our list of possible foods...

Hi BL - someone posted an interesting thread re auto immune diseases and gluten problems a month or so ago - it could have been Gena but it had research that showed a correlation between gluten and auto immune disease affecting the villi.   I have been tested for coeliac disease and gluten intolerance, both negative but I seem to get an ache in my stomach from time to time and I suspect it may be from gluten. So I will be on a gluten free diet again soon. Have heard the tests aren't particularly reliable.   I posted a really good recipe for a gluten free bread made in a breadmaker a while ago.
It is by far the best g/f bread recipe I have tried - I had migraines for years and always suspected there was a food correlation - glad that a gluten free diet is helping. I go on and off a gluten free diet quite regularly and always go back to it when I sense I need to.
There is a great range of g/f products available now in supermarkets and health food stores.
Lots of good g/f recipes on the net as well.
Good luck.
Cassandra, You wrote once you had a recipe for gluten free bread ( Not Bread Machine) and if anyone wanted it you would post ot. I would love to have it i you have the time. bump BL, do you have to make everything from scratch? I know that packaging is
pretty good about saying if it is wheat and dairy and gluten free. Any good
recipes? I know that mochi is a good snack if you have not tried that. I
don't know what I would eat if I went gluten free, dairy free. Maybe I would
be thinner, lol. i am really glad that people are starting to consider dietary changes along with regular treatment. Gluten Elimination has reduced flare ups for me as well.
Reading about Candida overgrowth in RA patients, and the cause of RA has really made me think and TRY.

OF COURSE DOCTORS WILL NOT ENCOURAGE THIS, because it takes money out of their pockets and the pharmaceutical companies pockets.. but what difference will just trying it be, for those who are considering it.

Just do it!

Gluten wasn't my problem.  It was yeast.  I start with a nutritionist on Monday.  Sigh.  I knew it was 'gut related'.

The celiac board has a lot of suggestions on eating gluten free.  I've been told a lot of the food is just delicious.

Thinkthin - cant remember at the moment where the other g/f bread recipe came from but will put some thought into it and I am sure it will come to me - RA& fibrofog
delays things sometimes.   If I have not replied in a few weeks give me a reminder. I have a coeliac friend with a good memory who I am sure will remember it as I probably mentioned it to her.Did ya'll know that some of Wal-Mart brand of food is Gluten-Free? Hey everyone...I have Celiac, so last 3 years for me have been gluten free. i dont notice a change in my joints but definetly my stomache :) anyway for gluten free cooking you can find lots of good recipes at celiac.com I shop at MOMS and whole foods for my GF stuff but even the grocery stores are starting to have stuff!! Xantham gum really helps in recipes...........Hi,

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that you feel better on a gluten-free diet.  If you do have any intolerance to gluten (ie celiac), then having gluten would likely exacerbate any other conditions you have (like RA).

I'm glad to hear you have found a way to improve your condition!

On a recipe note ... I made this for my celiac hubby, brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews.  Worth making several at a time, since it takes all day.

Lemon Meringue Ice Cream Pie in Toasted Pecan Crust

Unbelievably delicious and the pecan crust is going to be versitile for other pies.  I could never master a regular pastry, so haven't even tried for gluten-free.
