Hi!I have been experiencing jaw pain in my right jaw which has just gotten worse as the years have gone by.I can hear a cracking and popping when it is really bad. This winter I have learned that if I keep my jaws covered with a scarf protecting them from the wind when outdoors it did not hurt as bad.Does anyone else experience jaw pain and what do you do for it?Thanks for any advice you can give!

Hi,

I have had TMJ for 15 years. It can be very, very painful. I have had three surgeries. The last one solved most of my problems. I would start by seeing a dentist that is familiar with TMJ, that is a must. Most dentists don't have a clue what it is. He should be able to give you some answers and hopefully help you. Please don't wait. There things that can be done, without surgery that can help. You are right, the cold and wind still causes my pain and stiffness in my jaw. If you have any questions, please let me know. You can post here or pm me. Just please see someone, the sooner the better.

NTI Tension Suppression System

I was helped by this when my primary sent me to a local dentist who prescribes this device worn on your front teeth. The NTI Tension Suppression System I have had xrays ,pain pills, valium everthing just short of surgery, and this is great, takes a while to get use to it, I only ware it at night.  Good Luck NanSea

My jaws are both bone on bone.      The pain is debilitating at times
and I've experienced many types and severities of pain over the years.
The TMJ doctor I saw seemed more interested in selling himself and his
product to me that treating me as a patient. He refused to answer any of
MY questiions and talked a mile a minute. He must be related to a used
car salesmen .His first estimate for phase one of treatment was 00.
I'm guessing the whole thing would cost me nearly ,000.

My rheumatologist said to trust my instincts. He had not sent much
information to any of my doctors that I requested. I know because the
rheumatologist had to ask me what I'd found out. My answer was very
little and showed him the itemized estimate. He told me to trust my
instincts and go to an oral surgeon. There is an excellent one near where
I live.

I'm not confident that his splint/orthodic approach will work on jaws that
severely damages by arthritis. The TMJ guy would not address this issue.

I am so sorry to hear of everyone's pain.  I've been experiencing jaw pain myself for quite some time now.  I found this product online that has really helped me out.  I searched google and found this thing called the IceCaddy.  The IceCaddy is a velcro sling that goes around ones head and let's you ice/heat your face absolutely hands free.  It even comes with 2 packs that you can either freeze or heat up at your convenience.  It's great because I can go about my day and put something on my jaw to ease the pain at the same time.  I would check it out...

I also have jaw problems, no pain, just lot's of clicking. It just started about 2 months ago.  I see my rheumy in 2 wks and will ask about it. I have RA and OA, on methotrexate 1 yr. Is the jaw thing just one more part of the progression? Any suggestions??

I've also had problems with my jaw. It was really bad  number of years ago. My jaw would lock temporarily and I'd have to massage it and wiggle my jaw around to get it moving again. Sometimes it would be really painful. Now that I'm on arthritis meds, I haven't had that locking problem but I've still got the grinding and creaking. My Jaw has arthritis, I have problems when I visit the dentist as I cannot open my mouth fully, it bothers me sometimes.  I dont have clicking or pain in it, I just cant flex it a lot. You have one on each side of your face, just in front of your ears, where the temporal bone of the skull connects to the lower jaw (mandible). Your TMJs open and close like a hinge and slide forward, backward, and from side to side. When you bite and chew, they sustain an enormous amount of pressure. TMJ causes ear problems for me.  The swelling of the tmj puts pressure on my eustachian tubes and they can't drain properly.  I also have trouble going outside at all if it is cold or windy. I am just curious as to how many people have had consistent jaw pain and have not gotten a proper diagnosis. I recently had a conversation with my mother concerning this and she made mention of several drugs she has been on for several years. Turns out, they are drugs involved in a defective drug lawsuit. She had been taking Actonel for years, but her doctor did not tell her about these issues (ONJ) and recently changed to put her on Fosamax. She was referred to www.legalclassaction.org for more information. I was amazed to find this out.

Has anyone else had these problems and not been given any information on these issues? This is a pretty big problem, and I realize it has been out there for a while, but why are doctors not alerting patients about this?????
