Is this pain from my hip joints? | Arthritis Information

My joints are giving me a lot of trouble right now. I have new pain where the leg meets the hip and bends. It is on the outside edge of the area. I have been on vacation so have been walking more but have never had pain like this from walking before. I have had a tender spot in the same area for some months now but it only hurt when touched. Any thoughts?

Well, if it was tender before you may have irritated the joint with all the walking you have done that you normally do not do.

Now that you are back from vacation and back into your regular routine, see if you can squeeze in some extra rest here and there and try to baby that joint.  If you feel you are not getting any better, call your doc and see what they say about it.

Do you mean that it's in the front of your leg, right where your leg attaches to your body?  If yes, I had extreme pain there.

No, the pain is on the "out side" part of the leg. Have it on both legs now. I used to walk a lot and never had pain like it before.

I'm sorry to hear that, especially when it means you can't do the thing you love doing, going walking.  Hope it gets better soon.

hip joint pain usually is felt in the groin and down the inside of the leg/knee.  Soft tissue pain such as bursitis is generally felt on the outside of the body and down towards the outside of the knee.  Back pain reflects down the buttocks and back of the leg but is often felt on the outside of the hip as well.

And yes the soft tissue  hip pain can be as bad or worse than actually joint pain

Laker, I get this pain also.  My rheumy told me that it comes from the way that I walk and the bursi becomes inflamed from the ra.  They can give you a steriod shot to get rid of the pain or it will go away with rest.
It comes and goes with me and it seems that the surface that I am walking on or if I have a flare and limp has a lot to do with the amount of pain that I have.  Good Luck with it.
I had steroid injections in both bursas and boy did they work.  That was 4 years ago and I've not had a problem since then.  Even with having two bad knees and lurching around the hips have behaved themselves.  My pain was on the outside of the hip, exactly where yours is located.  It's typical of inflammed bursas.  Your rheumy can probably do the injections.  LindyI have that CONSTANTLY. My entire hip, insite, outside, to the touch, etc, it just ticked off when it's touched or I force it to move.

My old RD told me I was imagining it, and I had perect hips, if not too bony for his taste (he was always on me to gain weight...I guess cause he's not a slender person), but since I had such amazing flexibility and range of motion, there was NO way I was in pain.

My RD is ordering hip x-rays to see if she finds anything. Since one has NEVER been done.
I would ask your dr about it. It's NOT fun!!!
I had the same pain. Dr. said it was bursitis. He gave injections. He numbed the area first and I didn't even feel the shot. My hip was sore for a day or two but after that it was wonderful. Helped for a few months. I now have it again and at my next appt I plan on cking on another set of shots. Good LuckI get that too!!!! Usually, my hip will "pop" and then it doesn't hurt anymore........that's probably NOT the best thing for it, but typically I don't have control over the popping. It just happens. I know that when I'm flaring, I'll get that pain from sleeping on my side, without my pillow between my legs. I HAVE to have that support. Maybe try using a pillow?

I think you were right in that the pain may be from bursitis or inflammation of the tendon. I have been resting and it, along with my joints, are doing better! Let's hope it stays that way. I probably did too much on vacation although I slept for an hour or more each afternoon.I have been feeling much better since I increased to 10 mg of prednisone, in fact, better than ever before on 10 so I think perhaps the immuran is kicking in. I should be able to tper the pred soon, that will be the real test. Thanks!
