A shoe I recommend & tested | Arthritis Information

Hey everyone, I have been using this pair of shoes from when i was first diagnosed that lets me walk a little longer

They are called earth shoes. They feature "negative heel technology" so that when you put them on, you kind of feel as if your leaning back, but those who have problems with your ankles, the shoe puts most of your weight on your heel so that the weak ankles kind of get a rest. They claim its like a 3 degree incline.

Some people have a difficult time with that, but I thought they were great as soon as I put them on. They are reasonable, most between 109-120 dollars, but they last a long time, especially if you intend to wear them everyday for work or whatever.

here is a photo (its HTML photobucket, so i hope this shows up)

sophistablack39271.499224537Hey Sophistablack, LTNS. I have some Earth Shoes I bought before I was diagnosed. When I wore them to my rheumatologist she commented "Those are good shoes"---I think because they're square toed with velcro fasteners. The negative heel technology doesn't bother me but for my knee and plantar fasciitis I have to wear orthopeodic insoles and that doesn't work with Earth Shoes because their insoles are not removable. Now I usually wear Keens. I have several styles. That's so funny.  Earth shoes were the big gotta have shoe when I was in Jr High, let's see. I graduated high school in '81 so I guess that'd be in the mid 70's.  I guess it's true what they say.Oh the more it changes, the more it stays the same. Thanks...I knew they said something, but I couldn't think exactly what it was!!!

I swear, promise, stick a needle in my eye, but my sister got 2 pairs Earth Shoes at Wal-Mart! They are wonderful so we jumped in the car so I could get some and they didn't have my size

Dansko's are another great shoe for arthritic feet. They have rocker sole bottoms, so the pressure is taken off the metatarsal heads. They're the only shoe I can wear for any length of time.

This is the kind of thread that this forum is about!  Really helpful, useful stuff.  Thanx! I love keen. It is the only thing I can wear anymore. The only thing is, they
do not come in white but my employer says...wear whatever you can walk in
so that is what I do. I wouldn't wear anything else. I bit pricey but worth
every dime. Thanks for the website, I'm lookin at adding a couple more pair
to my wardrobe. those are very cute shoes! I wear danskos, crocs, burks and i cant remember the other one. At this point it is all about comfort!!I can add to this treas too. I also "re-discovered" Earth shoes last year. Years of almost unbearable foot pain solved almost overnight with the arrival of a box from UPS.

I will add that the Kalso Earth shoes are DIFFERENT then the Earth "Spirit" Shoes they sell at Wallyworld. The Spirit line is a very low end shoe that does NOT use the Kalso "negative heel" design. Just wanted to add this to the discussion to help someone avoid that potential mistake.

I can also add that I have a weird foot. Actually an 8.5 to a 9 but a wide (E) width due to a very high arch. I wear an Earth size 9.5M in their men's shoes. Also, I now have several pairs of these shoes and almost all of them fit the same.

Before I order any shoes I visit Planet Shoes and look for their user reviews for fit info just to confirm. But, I have bought all of my shoes via eBay and saved several hundred bucks. It can take time to find exactly the model I want but I have yet to pay over including shipping.

Right now I am hunting their new men's hiking boot:
Earth Men's Explorer on the Earth Shoe Site

My Ankles are AWFUL due to several high ankle sprains and a few borked bones too...so boots are a MUST if I am to be on my feet for a longer period. I'll even wear them with shorts simply because, well, pain is far worse then looking like a dork...hehehehehe...

Anyway, thanks for this thread...I think I need to do a bit of window shopping since my hands are keeping me up tonight.

:)BreckLundin39277.1582986111BTW, they used to make a women's boot called Earth Shoes "Charlize"....nice high boots that ould give just the support I want but cannot find in lower models.

I also use Dansco's to teach in all day.  I love the rocker bottom, because they almost do the walking for you.  I have had some good luck with Clarks, but their box is a little narrower than is sometimes comfortable.  I hate shoes!!!  I realized yesterday why I had such a push to ceramic tile and expose the wood floors in my house.  The floors stay cool.  No matter how tired my feet are the surface is cool and acts as an ice pack.  Strange!!!

My daughter and I are partial to Dr. Martens but for the last year or so they seem way too heavy for my legs. I never wear them anymore so flip flops are my shoe for home and clarks for everything else. I miss my Dr Martens tho
