OT seafood | Arthritis Information

There was a lot of talk about seafood in the Chinese mtx thread. A TV station here did a story about restaurant seafood recently. They ordered grouper and another type (can't remember, red snapper maybe?) at several restaurants - some chain, some local, some upscale, etc. - and tested the DNA. Like five of eight samples were not the fish they were sold as. Most were actually catfish; one they could not identify!!!!

Common thread - most of the fakes came from the same national distributor. Starts with an S. Ends with an O. Two syllables.

You really cannot blame a restaurant owner/mgr. for this, in my opinion. They order from a distributor they trust and are getting ripped off themselves.

How do you know which distributor the restaurant you are eating in uses? Easiest way - if there are sugar packets on the table, it will say it on them.

And, unless you caught it yourself, it's been frozen. Well, I live on the Gulf Coast, and eat at local rest. And they are all fresh catches. :) So I know I'm gettin the good stuff!!! I guess if you've never had grouper or amberjack, someone could fool you....but once you've had the REAL DEAL, I would think it'd be hard to sneak it past you.....maybe not, I dunno.I worked for a food broker. It's not all fresh. Glad you enjoy your local restaurant, though! It's fresh at our local joints, I can promise you that. You can go down to the docks and watch them pull it in. That's one of the big attractions down here, and part of why a grouper sandwich can run you anywhere from - depending on how big it is. It's about as fresh as it gets. I wish everyone could get seafood like this, its just AWESOME. I never even LIKED seafood until I moved here! Katie, I agree.  We also go to the docks where I live and get lobster, clams, shrimp, haddock, cod, etc and it has not been frozen at sea like a lot of fish.  But, like I mentioned on another thread, the ocean is polluted just like everything else. Cruise ships, transatlantic planes, pleasure boats, etc, all empty their trash, liquid or otherwise into the ocean.  Consumers don't stand a chance anymore. YUK!

Yeah when you are stuck in the midwest everything like that comes to us frozen.  Danielle would love fresh caught seafood like that.  I would love to see her face when she tastes the difference lol.

LOL Bring her down here Liz!!! *grin*

N&T, yeah that part sucks. :( Though....I'm guessing here....I think the only real threat of pollution in our immediate area (here in my area of FL) is from the oil rigs waaaayyy out off the coast. For the most part the rules about the water here are soooooooooooooooooooo strict, it's crystal clear for miles. That's one thing that I love about this area, the people LOVE their beaches and water. It's not like Daytona, or Miami, or Ft. Lauderdale....this part of Florida is like *no* other. I can't even explain it!! I keep saying that I'm going to take some pics to show you, and I REALLY should....y'all should bug me for them..hehe then maybe I'll do it!!!
