Yet another eye issue | Arthritis Information

So, my eye has once again be red and now the eyelid is super swollen.
My eye dr. fit me in today. I assumed it was no big deal-he'd give me
drops since I am always having an "itis" in that eye. Well, turns out it is
Cellulitis. He said that it was really serious-I was shocked. Anyway, I
have antibiotics to take orally and drops for the eye. Plus he doubled my
pred-back up to 10mg after weaning down to under 5mg. Anyway, he
said that if it continues are gets worse the next step is to be admitted
with IV antibiotics to save the eye. HUH? I had no idea it was that bad.
He asked me if it hurt and I said yes-of course. But, as you all know-we
tend to have a higher tolerance for pain.

So...in response to all those eye posts that keep popping up---GET THEM
CHECKED OUT SOONER THAN LATER!

BeckyWow.  Good thing you got in right away.  Hope it heals quickly without a hospital stay.yikes, I hope your eye starts feeling better very soon! I'm glad you got it checked out today...

Rocky -

Not sure where you stand on AP - but you might think about going to www.roadback.org and doing a search for uveitis and what you just said.  There's a woman there who almost lost an eye and what her doc had to do.  As far as I can tell, there are no more AP eye docs - but - if they're doing ABX, you should maybe look into a bit more.

Becky,

Cellulitis is a very serious bacterial infection. I had cellulitis several years ago after a surgery and came close to losing part of my leg. Sounds to me like your doctor is doing all the right stuff...I hope you get better very soon. Here is a linl from the Mayo Clinic concerning cellulitis..

Ih hunny I hope the systemic antibiotics and the eye drops work very well for you and you avoid a hospital stay.

take care and let us know how you are doing.

Aww, Rocky that sounds terrible.  I hope it gets better soon.  I hate to see you have more trouble w/your eyes.

Please take good care.

Hi Roccky, your post was a wake up call to all of us who put off going to the doctors because we think it's not important.  What a shock for you.  Any idea how cellulitis started in your eye?  On the lid or the skin around the eye, or actually on the surface of the eye?  I will not put off going to the eye doctor.  I've been having some problems with dry, hurting, swollen eyes.  Thank you for posting.  Please take care and I hope that the antibiotics start their magic right away. Thanks for the kind words! The eye is looking better. They problem was
mainly the lid. The eye itself was also red but basically it looked like I
had been punched in the eye. Very swollen. The main problem now is
that the antibiotics are very strong and killing my stomach! I guess I had
better not complain though.

The RD is concerned about all this. Serious infections are a side effect of
Remicade. I am not sure how this will change my treatment plan.

Rocky -

If the ABX they're giving you are by mouth - not just drops - you need to start taking probiotics ASAP.  Go get expensive enteric coated ones at someplace like Whole Foods.  Your stomach and gut will thank you - and it should take the stomach pain away.  Try 6X the RDA on the bottle in between ABX times.

Unfortunately, yogurt won't cut it when there is an ABX onslaught.

Hugs,

Pip

I'm glad the antibiotics are working. My daughter had cellulitis while on mtx (on her toe) and it is a serious infection - it is a staph infection, if that gives you more perspective.

And yogurt is better than nothing for your stomach (if you are more likely to make it to a grocery store than a health food store). Thanks for reminding me. My son had to take probiotics when he was a
baby. He had a lot of GI issues. You can get them at Walgreens.

You forget that you need bacteria in your system. I even teach this stuff.
Fun fact for you....99% of the bacteria in the world is good bacteria.    I'll
get some tomorrow if still is a problem. I am sure it will be since today
was just the first full day on the stuff.
